Question about first roll of E-6 (lab processed)

Hi,

The frame below is off the first roll of slide film I've shot.

As you can see, there is a weird edge effect going on in the bottom left-hand corner. There are many variables here because the camera is new, the film type is new (and expired), the lens is new and I've never gotten any film developed at that lab.

No other frames in the roll showed this issue. At first I thought I had overlapped frames, which happened earlier in the roll but that lightens the exposure instead of darkening it and removes the dark gap between frames which isn't the case here.

Any ideas?

I would not put any money on it, but i'd bet on a light/optical problem

Is it more likely to be in-camera or out-of-camera?

High there.
Looks like a backlight / flare problem for me... Direct sun in conjunction with older lenses can give "interesting" results.
Maybe some of the blackening in the camera itself is missing and reflects light to the film?

Looks like a flare problem to me. There's a tiny bit of sky discoloration in the leaves of the tree on the left side too, which reminds me of flare. The area outside the frame is dark (which is to be expected with slide film), which seems to indicate to me that it's not a light leak or something like that. That it was only in one frame, which was shot towards the sun, seems to indicate this is a flare problem, not a lab, camera, or other problem.

A lens hood might've helped this.

Yes, it's an older lens - Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AI-S. The blackening in the camera looks in good shape to me.

I didn't use a lens hood. The reason I discarded the flare idea was that I thought flare always came in circles and ovals... but it definitely makes sense that it can come in other shapes too depending on the conditions.

Thanks folks! I can just crop that part of the frame out, I just wanted to make sure the lab didn't screw something up

No problem. To me, E-6 is "normal" film, C-41, which most people think of as normal film, is something I seldom shoot.

That's what I want to do too, I don't understand the fascination with colour negative film, for me it's B&W or (now) E-6.

This is just a regular "120 roll not wound tightly enough when removing from camera", right? I only shot the holga in 120 before so there light leaks were normal, I just want to get my technique right for the GW690.

Didn't see your reply asking. My answer is both, but it has been already explained. Anyway, I find it curious that you didn't "see that light coming" in that moment. When a Lens Hood is not available, your own bared hand comes in "handy" as well ... you always carry one.

Worth clarifying I think - I thought there was a good chance to get flare in that situation but I wanted the shot anyway and didn't see any harm in provoking flare because it's a new lens (to me) and figuring out how and when it flares may be worthwhile. I just didn't realise flare can be rectangular like that so that's why I dismissed it as a cause in the beginning.

Anyway, I got useable image with just a hair of cropping in any case.
