Question about "f22 and be there..."

Ok, so f22. Good.

I will be using a 5" (maybe it's 7?) reflector. I'm going to go ahead with the HP5+, as it's what I have currently in bulk.

I guess I should say I'm not shooting portraits here. Going for standard "Press" type shots.

Would you like faster shutter speeds? The corrections for shutter speed, assuming 25 or 11 bulb are:

1/25 = .9
1/50 = .8
1/100 = .7
1/200 = .6
1/400 = .4

That is how efficient the shutter is at each speed. At 1/200, the shutter is about half as efficient as if it were transmitting the full amount of flash bulb light. In other words, at that speed only about half the flash bulb light actually gets through the shutter due to the opening/closing cutting off some of hte burn time. So you'd have to compensate by adding one stop... approximately.

You forgot the high rise waist. That way the belt buckles about the level of the arm pits.

John, I will verify with the Kodak calculator when I get home.

Those tables should have the shutter efficiency already factored in. All you need to do is do the GN calculation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guide_number

I don't have a solenoid. I can't fire from the flash, which would be nice.
I will be firing from the cable release.

Years ago, I used electronic flash for wedding candids but used flash bulbs to shoot posed shots of large groups. I went back through my notes and found the following information:

GE 11B medium screw base flash bulb in Graflex flash with 7-inch reflector
ASA 100 film
10 feet flash to subject distance
f/16

Sylvania 25B bayonet base flash bulb in Graflex flash with 7-inch reflector
ASA 100 film
10 feet flash to subject distance
f/11

I hope my notes are of some use to you.

That is what I am finding regarding bulbs in general. The manufactures notes regarding bulb timing/f-stop are what everyone else has suggested.
I'll be using #25 bulbs in a 5-inch reflector, with HP5+.
I'm going to shoot at either f/16 or 22... Still have to test.

I'm glad to hear this. For a while I thought you only had 6 bulbs and thought you'd have 100% success without ever testing.

The data points offered by narsuitus generally agree with my Kodak PhotGuide... which I've found accurate when shooting even chromes, so I tend to swear by it.

As before, GN = 500 for what you want to do... with no shutter efficiency correction (1/25 or slower). For 1/100 the GN becomes 350.

To shoot what you spec'd a couple of posts ago, try as a starting point:

1/100 @ f/22 for 15' distances, or f/16 for 22' distances, or f/11 for 30'.

OK!

So, its night time, which means its dark here. So, I shot two #11'ses and two #25's. Then, after I had a great time talking to the neighbors about the big Speed Graphic, I relaised I didn't have enough developer to do a proper 1:9 in the 4x5 daylight tank, which takes massive amounts of liquid. SO, the negs came out way underdeveloped. STILL, there was enough detail in what I could see, that: At f11 @ 1/25 I got about 30' in focus. Rail set with Infinity at the 10' mark (or maybe 15... ) AND, I learned something else. You have to take the dark slide out, or nothing happens.
I was excited, and forgot on one. So, a wasted bulb. People still clapped at the brightness, but then I just ran and got another one, and... problem solved. I don't think I want to go f16, there is something about it that seems TOO much... In fact, I may go f8 @ 1/25. I had my Ektar 127 set at Flash=20... the little slidey thing. I have the option to set it at 5... but I don't know if thats a good thing or not. Seem to work just fine... well I should say it FEELS right.

Who knows.

I'm going to test some more next week. I'll keep you posted.

Well, the Wedding was a success. The Photographer and his wife were more interested in my Speed Graphic than in taking pictures. The crowd however, wasn't really paying attention to his puny little pixleator 9000 or whatever he had, until I fired off a #25. That got everyone's attention. I shot 6 sheets, and I think they will come out well. I was supprised that the photographer actually knew about films and speeds and pushing and what HP5+ was... We didn't get in each others way, and he took some pics with me and my Speed Graphic.

I'm going to develop tomorrow, and I'll post the scans.
