so my questions is this: when you have it in "a" mode, what is the longest shutter speed you can use with out loosing some of that exposure time to the camera closing the auxiliary shutter and advancing? also if it's in this mode and you are using a slow shutter speed like 1/2 sec, is this bad for the shutter in the lens for the camera to advance it while it is still exposing?

It depends a bit on the batteries and the 'nick' the camera is in, but 1/30 would be the slowest speed.

It is not bad for the shutter really. But it is for your exposure.
