pushing tri-x with D23

I have a new camera that I want to shoot at an exposure index of 800, that being the highest film speed setting on the camera.

Ordinarily when I want speed I shoot tri-x at about 1250 and develop with Diafine, but 800 is too much exposure for using Diafine and the negs get pretty dense and I think finer-grained results could be had by pushing to 800 with a regular developer.

The regular developer I'm using right now is D23; can D23 be used to push film ok? I don't know if it's bad for pushing because it has no hydroquinone in it or something. For a 1-to-2-stop push, should I start with 25% more development time or so?

I once needed to expose a roll of Tri-X in my camera at EI 1000. Of course, I use D23. When i wound the film out of the camera, I found it was a roll of Ilford FP-4. I forget how long I souped it--18, 20 minutes, perhaps? The negs were easily printable--grainy, but otherwise just fine. Yes, you can push with D23, I think better than with most any other soup, because it builds up density faster than contrast. I cannot give you a time, though. I think the old time for old Tri-X according to EK was 12 minutes, which I always found terribly long; but I would have to lukitup.

if this are importanat photos i would recommend to make a testroll and develop it.

D-23 should work well as a push developer.
Metol is a very energetic developing agent and
will bring forth little exposed areas of the film.
Hydroquinone disproportionately reduces the
more exposed silver, builds contrast. That
you do not want.

For greatest shadow density and printable
highlights use D-23 very dilute. I've had
good results at 1:7-500ml. Agitate less
and at two or three minute intervals.

how many ml of stocksolution do i need for developing one film (minimum)???

i have tried 1+3 in 250ml and it works without problems.

If you took 1/16th liter of that D-23 stock strength and
diluted it with 7/16th liter of water you'd have the
working strength and volume I use. Works well
for one roll of 120.

I've used as little as 0.3 grams of metol and I'm sure
less will do. A 1/16th liter, 62.5ml. If your solution
volume MUST be less than 500ml you'll need to
experiment to find how little will do. Dan

I've not used D23, but Tri-X at 800 should probably be fine in Diafine. Just another option to consider...
