Pushing HP5

Howdy,

I want to play around at ISO800 or ISO1600 and the only film I have in the cupboard is HP5.

How does this film respond to pushing? Will developing it in LC29 cut the mustard (if processed at the suggested rates)?

I have never push exposed or processed a film before, so I am a little hesitant...I suppose I should just go out and shot right?

Like Nike says: JUST DO IT! Yeah!
I have a half-finished roll of HP5+ pushed to 1600 so if you want to wait a month for me to finish, process and print from it then sure, otherwise....NIKE!

That or use Google Image Search but make sure the image isn't a mistake result.

Yes, indeed, JUST DO IT!

HP5 produces nice results both @ 1600 and 3200. Things are grainy, but it's some good grain When I push HP5 I use Ilford DD-X as my developer (see the inside of the packaging label for development times). I haven't got around to use Ilford power developers for push processing yet, but I would expect the results to be near identical.

My first post too. I recently shot a roll of HP5+ at EI 800, developed in Rodinal 1+25. I thought it turned out pretty well, and the grain was surprisingly discreet.

In medium/large format, I almost always rate HP5 at 800. I use HC-110 and find the tonal scale very smooth and the grain--well in 4x5 its not even there. In 6x4.5 just enough to remind you its there. HP5 is very forgiving and HC-110 is dead simple and for me wuite predictable. The portrait below is an example of why I like the combination.

hell ive had good experiences pushing it @3200 with ilford dd-x, about to push it to 800 in t-max.

For those of you who are pushing HP5+, have you found that there is any real speed increase in DD-X or Microphen, as opposed to Xtol?

It was a 4x5 135mm optar--I think it wa a neg scan--the print looks like you could dip your finger in it.

Temp was 20c, dilution was 1+25 and time was 19 minutes.

I travel on business a little and have taken to carrying a body, normal lens and a couple rolls of HP5 that I expose at 800 handheld. I like the results quite a bit and can print to 9 1/2 X 14 with a grain that is appropriate for street photography with tonal range. I follow Ilford's recommendations for HC, 9:30 min at 1+31. I can't tell you how it compares to box speed as this all I use this film for. The scans others have posted look pretty good, too, so I'd say you have little to worry about.
