Concerning the quality and "heavy duty" of the TLR-series, the former GX is better build then the actual FX. But they know that also in Braunsweig. The regular Eur. 3200,- (FX) price is not made without any compromize.

However the actual models are very nice. Eur. 2400,- is also the price from Singapore.

Well, the visual difference in photos between the old and new cameras isn't going to be that much. If you want to save money, look for a clean older Rolleiflex with a Planar or Xenotar (or even a Tessar or a Xenar).

It would be best if you could test a roll in the camera before you buy.

I've been trying to find a clean 2.8C. I'm on my fourth camera and have pretty much given up. It's been an expensive attempt.

OK, an other viewpoint: a Rolleicord Vb in Ex condition will cost you € 500,- on ebay "Buy now".
A Rolleiflex 2.8F in good condition is for sale for € 1000,- and quite a few are under bidding right now.
On the other hand the FX is the latest model and new, so F versus XF is like used versus new.
The only thing I am not shure about is the type of battery used in the FX, if is mercury you are in a bit of trouble as they are no longer sold and you will need some extra chash to be able to use a diferent type of battery.

What I would do with plenty of money ? I realy don't know, probably get both together with a verry late 3.5F, but I got a 2.8F allready and love it. I got it for free as a write-off and restaured it myself.

What I would not go for: the T-model (never liked them) and the verry early models if you want to make pic's with one.
On the other hand, if you would run into a D or E model (have not seen any on ebay today) for around € 600,- in good working condition: by all means.
Some times waiting a bit does no harm to one pocket money-wise, on the other hand..... I would be tempted !

Dyo, I shot an F100 for years before finding my dad's Rolleiflex 2.8F. You are embarking on a great voyage that you will not regret. Even shooting 4X5 now, my Rolleiflex still always comes along. Enjoy!

"PX28 type 6V silver oxide or lithium battery. Battery powers light meter only"

The FX, FT and FW are the current Rolleiflex models, so of course they don't use mercury batteries.

And don't forget, that the maker of the cameras, Franke & Heidecke, may have closed down for good. This may be your last chance to get a brandnew one.

Go for it. Is it more camera than you need? Of course! But that is true of virtually every camera, car, hi-fi or bloody cell phone sold today. Unlike a phone it will last for the rest of your life and you will always have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you bought factory fresh with no problems or stories, etc. It will take the best photos that everyone you know has ever seen. Just load it with 100 speed C-41 and you will be slain by the quality of your snapshots. You will be no less delighted when you load it with B&W for 'serious photos'. Plus, although it seems as if you are spending a fortune on a camera, you in fact are probably spending less than a lot of folks spend on gourmet coffee in a couple of years - and we know where that all ends up! And nobody thinks their neighbor is crazy for spending $20,000 on a bass boat and then spending $1,500 per year to insure it. But in a few years they will be calling the junkman to haul it away! Remember, all of those used megabuck 3.5F Whitefaces were bought new at one time - and now they are trading for far more than they originally sold for!! Bottom line - live a little. You will regret it for about five minutes when you pay the bill and you will literally never think about the money again. But you will enjoy every image, every time. Just my two drachma.

With a new Rollei I don´t think things can go wrong. The central shutter is easy to service for a technican and even if the Franke&Heidecke company disappears there are still excellent repairers around in Germany. No risk.
