Pulling Ilford fp4

Hi everyone,


I’m planning to pull fp4 and wondering what will be the outcome? Probably the contrast will be lower but I’m thinking of the processing as well.

What if I shoot it at 50 and develop it as 50? Only the contrast or the grain will be tighter as well?

What if I shoot it at 50 but develop it at box speed?

What if I shoot it at 50 or 25 or 12 but develop it at one stop higher or at box speed?

What if I shoot it at 50/25/12 and develop it as 50/25/12 and only adjust the rest during the enlarging and paper developing process?

Sorry if it’s obvious and I tried to trace down some solutions but I couldn’t really find exact answers.

Pulling will have influence on your shadow details - allow more light on the film and shadow detail will increase. Cutting your development time will decrease the contrast of the film. So expose as 50 iso and develop as 50 iso will give you nice soft negatives with good shadow detail. Expose at 50 iso and develop as 125 iso will give you normal contrast negatives with good shadow detail. There is plenty of reading material on this topic. A search on Zone System will lead you to some good info on the web.

This video gives some good Examples/Reasons for Pushing-Pulling film.
I believe he uses a "famous" Ed Weston photo in the pulling arena.
You could probably fast-forward to 8 minutes or so, but that is entirely up to you.
