Provia 400X?

Anyone used this film yet? Impressions? Is it a finer grained 400f? Is that even possible?

I haven't seen anyone selling it yet. I looked on Calumet just last week for the film.

According to Fuji, it's finer grained and more saturated than 400F.

Not sure if its really finer than K25, K25 Is RMS 9, (Astia 100 is now RMS 7 and its 2 stops faster) Although at RMS11 that makes Provia 400x Finer than K64 (RMS 12).

This is all on paper stuff, I have not seen any real world examples, its tough to find comparisons of different films on the web.

But 400x will be good in the area that I still think film excels in, and thats the low light shooting abuility of small compacts, Unlike the the differnce between film and digital SLRs, where digital seems to have an advantage at higher ISOs. When It comes to small compacts, film is still way ahead, and its good to see it can raise the bar.

I kinda remember Fuji stating that it would not be available in the US until the existing Provia 400 stocks were depleted.

A very late reply, but I have been testing this film for a few weeks now. So far I really like the results, it is much finer grain than the older Provia 400. My initial impressions are its not quite as fine grained as Provia 100, but very close. The saturation is somewhere in between Velvia and Provia. I just posted an shoot taken on 400X in my gallery (Mt. Fuji) if anyone is interested.

Excellent test result

Hallo,

last autumn the french photomagazine "Réponses Photo" published a detailed test of the new Provia 400X. They said that this new film is excellent, much better than the old Provia 400. The grain of the new emulsion is significantly finer and the color saturation is higher. The results with push processing at 800 ASA are excellent, too. Réponses Photo rated the film at 94 from 100 possible points. Such a high rating for a product is very seldom in this photomagazine.

400X 120 (5) is available in the UK now. 120 singles and 35mm will take a little longer due to stock turnover apparently. Product data sheet attached. I have the brochure pdf as well but it's too large to upload to APUG.

Good to know, and I seriously think you should parlay them into getting someone to make interventions here. Simon R. Galley of Ilford has built quite a successful relationship with APUG, and given the love of many people for Fuji products, I'm sure the same could happen again.

My own opinion is not worth that much, but I will give it a go. The color balance is very very natural, does seem to have the sometimes borderline unnatural feel of velvia (which is my main color film). I have taken a couple of portraits as well and the color rendition was very very nice.

Daylight shade seems pretty good, but I will have to shoot some more before I make a final decision. But, my first impressions are its pretty good. Provia 400X seems like it would do very well under high contrast conditions, but again I need to shoot a couple of more rolls under varying lighting conditions before I make up my mine.
