Last night I was talking with our dear Serdar Bilici on google , he is building a huge wet plate camera.

I thought if the light sensitive thing in collodion wet plate is Silver Iodide nano crystal , I could buy it online.

Do I need to protect that nanocrystal from light ? How can I buy protected nanocrystal.

My project is to mix it with pva and making photochromic endless use wet plate version.

sandy king has written about using pva/elmers glue as a
photographic substrate, and from what i remember it does not
work ... good luck with your experiments !

Hello all,

I found two things in technology.

First , they use organic dyes in plastics and agbr, agI and other inorganics in glass. Reverse is may be posssible but what I told is common technology.

I am still hopeful , I found architecture building windows which photochromic.

If I can find AgI or silveriodide building photochromic window , it is alright.

John , you are an architect , what do you know ?

Thank you,

Umut

... not really understanding what your end use / end product will be.
is it "tinted" glass that goes from light in the night time to dark in the day time ?

exactly , do they call it tinted glass ? aha !

ps.If I am not wrong , they call tinted glass for its tinted film coating , if I am wrong correct me John.

I am after tinted or photochromic glass sheet which contains silver iodide nano crystals to replicate wet plate chemistry.

i am grasping at straws as to what this glass is or might be

i've never heard of photochromic glass, but i do know there are eyeglasses ( and window pane )
that are made in such a way they get dark in sunlight ( like sunglasses ) and clear in the absence of sunlight ..
maybe it is that ?

my uneducated + clueless stab in the dark - guess it is silver iodide is somehow mixed into the molten glass when it is formed
and it seems like it would be potentially dangerous+toxic to melt the glass and extract the silver iodide.

if you do this, make sure you leave a note so when they find you they will be able to administer an antidote to
whatever fumes you might have breathed in

The problem is that in a photo-sensitive glass the released halide atoms and non-image forming silver halide cannot be removed as they are in either a collodion plate or traditional emulsion. So after a period of time the image fades. In other words the image cannot be fixed.

hi jerry

so in that case would this glass be image forming and it reverts back to its original non-imaged-state again ?

I think Gerald is right , I am after that but not after other thing.

Buying a window glass , take photograph , print and 15 minues later , it is ready for other.

My friend told me it costs around 50 dollars per shot with traditional way , I am after 10000 shots for total 30 dollars of glass.

I did not mean other thing , first post was amateurish.

I believe it is essentially the same process as "Transitions" eyeglasses - the ones that darken and lighten automatically with exposure to sun (actually UV and heat)

Exactly , I found a paper at a russian journal , not all paper but first two pages and there was a electron photograph where the crystal forms a 3 dimensional structure like new york skycrapers , where every building is different size but they are extremelly near to each other.

I thought that pattern could act to light interestingly , I am leaving to your imagination but light and shadow , silvery sheen can form a interesting macro world on glass.

I always thought carbon is an interesting concept but nanocrystal scale relief is faraway more interesting.

not sure how one could make a print from it if light+heat will turn it black
transitions glasses turn dark pretty fast, it isn't a slow change ... managing an image out of it
might be a battle of wills.

50$/shot ? seems a 10x more expensive than it is in the us. are you sure your friend didn't say $5?
here enough materials and chemistry to make 65 plates ( 8x10) [ 270 4x5 plates ] is $350 which is about $5USD [ 1.25$ / 4x5] each.
i've read that it is less expensive than film and paper to do wet plate .. expensive to set up just because you have to buy stuff ... ( or make it )

I will make it cheaper , I dont have place and nerve to store hundreds of glass plates at home and yes it is expensive here but I will tell my friend to source from china.

Thank you for tip.
