Proper way to hold an SLR.

I'm RHOT, but I'm left handed. I guess it makes sense.

If I were more relaxed; I'd be dead...

Okay, resized image...

Enjoying this thread -- so important to pass along technique to the younger folks.

Here's my take on it. Notice the left hand supporting the weight of the camera, and the thumb and forefinger on the focus ring and the right finger on the shutter release. Also notice this is a real, bonafide, proper SLR.

I set this up today thinking it would be my Photo of the Day, but...it's a public blog and there could be trouble...

Taken, ironically, with a rangefinder, 25mm lens, Eastman Plus-X.

And don't forget to stick your tongue out!!!

I have no problems with Righ Hand On Top, also because I shoot with both eyes open.

Hopefully this will end the uncertainty:

LEFT: Proper way to hold a TLR
RIGHT: Proper way to hold an SLR
BELOW: Proper way to hold a view camera

"False" (No Tongues?????)
:munch:

Wonky, tiring stance. Elbows up and away from the body. No hand supporting the camera from below. Lens hand and fingers sticking a couple of inches further forward than the front of the lens. Screams 'amateur' in my book. I'll freely admit it could be a 'pro' who never had proper instruction.

David William White's woman in the white shirt has it right for 35mm SLRs. That's the hold that the controls were designed for.

The way Olympus always illustrated vertical orientation hold...

...where the supporting hand is not causing motion when the shutter is released by the same hand.

I'll freely admit that is a [terribly obvious] JOKE. A goof goofing...

Well, perhaps, but not that terribly obvious in the context of the other camera holds included in the same post, and not necessarily on the internet, where irony is mostly lost unless someone already knows the poster, or a 'smiley' is nearby. Lots of stuff as stupid as this camera hold (or worse) is presented seriously on the internet.

The context is what gives it the humor IMO....Would it be funny if the other two weren't pretty normal ways to use those cameras?

I only included the TLR and view camera because they happened to "match". All were shot on the same day at the same place, and all were intended to be kind of goofy/wonky. The surreal location also makes it seem as if this was a stylish "set" of an instructional photo shoot or something. (I didn't even know the view camera shot was being taken.)

Just joking around now...as I am perhaps 90% of the time.....don't skin me or anything.

I really thought the joke would be quite obvious here on APUG.

The original post in this thread, apparently taken from an Olympus instruction manual, has the same bad hand position on the lens as your joke shot, and is meant to be an example of how to hold a camera correctly. APUG isn't immune to bad info. It's an open forum. Not picking on you. Just saying that there's not that much difference between APUG and the internet at large.

No excuse for forgetting to stick your Tongue out! IS IT??

The Photographers marksmanship principles

1. The position and hold must be firm enough to support the Camera

2. The Lens must point naturally at the Subject without any undue physical effort

3. Sight alignment (Composition & Light) must be correct

4. The shutter must be released and followed through without disturbing the position

I shoot however it takes to get a shot, however stupid i look. I've been lying on the ground in full view of the public to get a shot.

Anything for the shot.
