-Basho Goes to Japan-
Founded by a Japanese photographer, Project Basho has been working closely with photography in Japan to promote cultural exchange. Last year we ran a successful destination excursion to the Japanese countryside and this year, we have expanded our educational opportunities to include several workshops.
Last week, we organized a portraiture workshop with Dead Link Removed in collaboration with the Japan Institute of Photography and Film in Osaka. During this three day workshop, students at JIPF learned not only about what goes into a great portrait, but also about different ways to view and read photographs based on cultural differences.
This year, we are also working with Motoyuki Kubo from The Prints, a respected printer in Japan, to offer workshops on alternative processes in Tokyo. In Japan, workshops like these are still very rare and typically the majority of information avaialable is in English. These occasions provide a setting for participants to learn about the processes and actually see how it is done as well as hear about how other photographers are using alternative processes to create work.
We are excited to be part of this exchange, and are working to expand on similar projects.
-Project Basho Continues Collaboration with other Cultural Organizations-
Project Basho has been working closely with many other cultural organizations in the Philadelphia area, as well as abroad. This year, Tsuyoshi Ito, Founder and Program Director of Project Basho, has been invited to juror the 3rd Annual Media ICONS (& Beyond) Photography Contest. The purpose of the contest is to support and promote photographers and art photography in the greater Media area, create exhibition opportunities for local artists, increase community cultural development, and promote the character of Media.
Works selected by Tsuyoshi Ito will be included in the Media ICONS Photography Exhibit hosted by the Media Arts Council on October 2nd, and prizes will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place. The deadline for submissions is Friday, September 4th by 8:00pm. For more information on the contest and how to enter please visit: http://www.mediaartscouncil.org/icons09/.
This fall, we will also be collaborating with the Dead Link Removed to teach Dead Link Removed as a part of their arts and cultural events. At Project Basho, we feel that collaberation amongst cultural organizations fosters a greater sense of community in our area, and are pleased to be involved with places like the Gershman Y, and the Media Arts Council. -Fall Classes Soon to Begin-
We have an exciting list of classes and workshops for this fall. Class registration is going strong, and we look forward to an inspiring and full semester. We are offering a new class titled "Photographic Vision Digital Color". This class, taught by Rick Wright, will teach students how to effectively use color to create artistic digital photos. We are also offering an exciting new workshop called "Exploring the Marshlands" led by Tsuyoshi Ito. Students will embark on a 5 day shooting exploration around the Delaware Bay where they will immerse themselves in photography. Please view our website for the full list of classes and workshops.

- This class is for those who want to attain a basic knowledge of photography - from operating a 35mm manual camera to basic darkroom practices.
Photographic Vision Digital I (Evening Class: Mondays, September 28 - December 7, Day Class: Tuesdays, September 29 - December 8)
- In this course, we will use modern digital photographic technologies to create images in the classic black and white style.
Photographic Vision II (Evening Class: Wednesdays, September 23 - December 9)
- This course is a continuation of Photographic Vision I in which students will work to refine their darkroom skills and develop their artistic vision with their photographers eye.
Photographic Vision Digital Color (Evening Class: Tuesdays, September 29 - December 1)
- This class is designed for those students interested in harnessing color's power, emotion, texture, story using digital photography.
Introduction to Digital SLR (One-Day Class, Saturday, September 19)
- This class will show you how to take advantage of the most modern sophisticated cameras for your creative needs.
Exploring the Marshland (Five-Day Workshop, Wednesday - Sunday, October 7 - 11)
- This is a long weekend workshop where participants will immerse themselves in photography day and night, celebrating it as a creative outlet and a way to connect with others and the surrounding environment along the Delaware Bay.
