Summer Classes Start Next Week!
Only one week remains until our summer semester commences! With an expanded lineup featuring introductory and intermediate-level classes, and a flexible schedule with classes on weekends, evenings, and mornings, we truly have something for everyone.
The semester kicks off with our ten-week introductory class Photographic Vision I. Offered in both analog and digital sections, this popular class is an in-depth introduction to the medium. By paying attention to light, composition, tone and perspective, students develop visual literacy and discover the unique potential of photographic expression.
Students who cannot commit to the full-semester course might consider Digital Photography I, a condensed 5-week introduction to the technical issues of using a DSLR, editing in Photoshop, and making inkjet prints.
Photographers with past experience have a lot to choose from. In Photographic Vision Digital II, students focus on long-term projects to develop a uniquely personal style and vision that unites their work. We also have advanced processing classes for both digital and analog photographers. In Digital Workflow I, students will learn how to combine Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom to create a powerful and comprehensive imaging system. In B&W Printing: The Next Level, students will learn how to incorporate subtle but potent techniques into their gelatin silver printing.

Expanding the Dialogue ONWARD '11 in Japan
We were glad to meet many of the participants of ONWARD '11 at the exhibition at RING CUBE in Tokyo, which ended last Sunday. Juror Award recipient Mary Beth Meehan, was flown out to see the exhibition and we also met up with Pierfrancesco Celada, whose image The Phone, Tokyo won this year's West Collection Purchase Award.

Adventures in Japan
This summer we are organizing a unique excursion for photographers: a 13-day destination trip exploring the coastline, rural villages, and cities of Japan. Led by Tsuyoshi Ito, Program Director of Project Basho and native Japanese speaker, this multifaceted trip will present participants with experiences that would be otherwise difficult for outsiders to come across.
Beginning in the bustling metropolis of downtown Tokyo, participants will get a glimpse of the pace and energy of this great city before escaping to the countryside to visit smaller towns which dot the coastline. Participants will visit historic temples and shrines, participate in a local harvest festival, and of course, get a taste of the characteristic cuisine.
Group excursions will focus on cultural exchange and exposing participants to many sides of Japanese culture. Travelers will also have ample time to break off from the group and photograph on their own. In light of March's earthquake and tsunami, the trip will not travel to the northern parts of the country where damage is most pronounced.
