Spring Semester Begins Next Week!
We started 2010 with the goal of reaching 365 students in the year, a rate of one student a day. We cut it close, but on December 31st, at the eleventh hour (literally), we processed our last registration of the year, bringing our grand total to... exactly 365! (How's that for precision?) The lucky 365th student is a newcomer to Project Basho, Matthew Weinberg, and receives the Big Fish Prize of a free class or workshop for himself and a friend! To mark this milestone we are also sending out collotype prints featuring work by several of our instructors and members to all of our students from the past year as a small token of our appreciation.
We now look forward to the spring semester which begins next week on Tuesday, February 1 with our two semester-long introductory courses, Photographic Vision I and Photographic Vision Digital I. This semester we welcome several new visiting workshop instructors including Linda Connor, Arlene Collins, and David Hilliard. We are also pleased to introduce a series of intensive workshops whose class-size is limited to no more than six students guaranteeing maximum individual instruction and hands-on participation. These intensives include Studio Lighting, Photoshop & Lightroom Magic, Creating Digital Negatives, and Fine Gelatin Silver Printing.
On March 5 & 6, we will host Susan Hayre Thelwell to teach Self-publishing Your Photobook. This workshop is an introduction to the art of bookmaking using print-on-demand technology. Participants will learn about book layout and design, experiment with sequencing, and will become familiar with Blurb's Booksmart software.

ONWARD '11 Opening
ONWARD '11, an exhibition of our annual photography competition opens in just two short weeks, on February 10th, with an opening reception on Saturday, February 12th from 2-5 pm. This year's show was curated by the legendary Larry Fink and features 70 works by 63 talented emerging photographers from across the United States and around the globe.
We hope you will join us for the opening reception on February 12 where we will announce the winners of the top prizes: a two-person show at our gallery and an invitation to the exhibition's opening at Ricoh's photo gallery RING CUBE in Tokyo this May. We will also be shooting instant film courtesy Dead Link Removed, so stop by if you have wanted to see this resurrected Polaroid film first-hand. Refreshments will be served.
Exploring Ireland and Japan
We are pleased to offer two exciting destination trips for photographers this year, one to Ireland and the other to Japan. On these photography trips, participants have a chance to shoot in novel, beautiful locales in addition to experiencing a unique view of local arts, food, customs, and history.
From May 7 - 14 we will head to Ireland's Southeast, where participants will tour the museums, galleries and pubs of Dublin before setting off for Cow House Studios, a progressive art space in County Wexford. From this base, travelers will take day trips to historic cultural sites in the area and reconvene for group critiques, workshops, and studio sessions.
Then from September 1 - 13, we will lead a two-week traveling tour of rural Japan. Participants will experience Japan's coastal landscape, food, historic temples and distinctive architecture, and will be exposed to the balance of a traditional rural lifestyle within a quickly modernizing country.

Opportunities at Project Basho
Project Basho is currently seeking dedicated individuals to join our team of studio monitors and office assistants. These positions are an excellent opportunity to join a community of enthusiastic photographers, learn more about photographic processes, and get access to photography equipment. Volunteers are compensated through use of our facilities and discounts on our educational offerings.
