Problems using a "soft shutter" for 35mm

I have Read/Heard that use of a soft shutter can or will damage the Olympus "OM" series of cameras. I removed them from my OM-1 because of that.
Is this something that was pretty much unique to Olympus.?
Were there other 35mm SLR that did not like having a soft shutter button attached.?

News to me. Apparently when you use a soft release, the mechanism can be subjected to lateral forces that you wouldn't get using just the normal shroud-protected release on the OM.

I expect any problems are mostly due to what happens if you catch the soft release on something and give it a yank.

"Normal OM release button is recessed and protected from anything pressing against the top cover. Add a soft release and anything pressing against the top cover will exert most of the force on the button and internal levers."

That is an argument that applies to all cameras with a recessed, or flat release button where you add such accessory button.

So that is the crux of the problem, and i suppose answers my question.?
It would be a matter of identifying an SLR with that design of a shutter Release/Button.

There is no actual problem. The idea behing that warning is that if something falls onto your release button, or presses onduly onto it the impact would go directly to the innards of the release mechanism (what I'm even not quite sure about...) whereas without that accessory button the force only wold hit the top cover.

Think for yourself how realistic such scenario is.

No -- it is any lateral force hitting the side of the soft release that causes damage.

Without knowing the built up to the finest detail we could argue long time on axial or lateral force and which has greater effect. But the question remains how great the chances are for any force to hit that accessory button under the circumstance the camera typically is used.

To me it seems CMoore was rather victim of a tempest in a teapot.

Hhmmmmmm.....i would have to read John/Camtech site again. I thought the problem with the soft shutter on the OM-1 was that the "Screw" protrudes far enough that it causes a problem with Repetitive/Long Term use........

That would be a matter of the design of that accessory button. Of course it should adhere to the standard for that threading.
Otherwise that would be a weird looking screw. But the effect of that screw being too long would be similar to that of too much force being put on a common cable release plunger during actuating.
Again I do not see the problem.

The holes a tapered thread that it goes in , it can't go in any further than a cable release .
In fact in use the cable goes in much further to function .
In normal use no harm can happen , only if it is struck or snagged is harm likely to happen .
