Probleme Carbon With Indian Ink

Hi all the Carbon Printer,

I have a problem with my carbon printing.
I use gelatin and India ink

On my carbon, I see a small black dots as
if there were black specks and very small.

I do not know why and I can not find the solution even by filtering the India ink knowing that I use gelatin and still liquid India ink.

Someone on the forum have had this problem with India ink and you have a solution?

I had a similar problem when I used an old bottle of Speedball ink that my school was going to dispose of. Switching to a new bottle solved it.

Isopropyl alcohol an cause the ink particles in glop to aglomerate into little grains. Use less IPA and mix it 50/50 with water, if you are using it. I sometimes use 50ml/liter of glop cut with water if I am in a hurry, but the bubbles will go away on their own if you wait long enough.

Should we remove the liquid soap? Is it useful or not?

Hi Philippe,

Many modern liquid soaps are not really soap, they are synthetic detergents, and they do not necessarily behave in the same way as true soap does. I use soap in my recipe, but I make my own soap and use soot as the pigment. As you are using Indian Ink, a soap-based glop is not needed; try using isopropyl alcohol instead to control the bubbles.

Could one use Methanol or Ethanol instead of IPA?? I'm planning to try Carbon printing but getting IPA in Belgium is a P.I.T.A.

One could simply use PhotoFlo or other surfactant in place of IPA or soap. Is it a waterproof Indian ink? Those contain lacquers I believe.

I routinely make tissue with only gelatine, bore water, sugur and pigment. Keep it simple. The bubbles go away if your glop sits for some hours and a threaded coating rod seems to get rid of any that dont.

Hi Philippe,

Yes try it with just a simple recipe. I only use soap as my soot pigments contain a fair amount of oils and tars still and without the soap, the carbon tissue is not good. I find passing the glop through a fine filter will often help remove most of the bubbles too.
