I've finally managed to piece together my LF kit which I bought from Ffordes. It arrived yesterday and I examined it all as I took it out of the box and everything looked in A1 condition.
I've spent all this morning in the back garden trying the movements and getting to grips with everything. I then had a cup of tea went back to the garden and found lots of little white specks inside the front element of the lens. At first I thought it must be some kind of moisture but the specks are too small and white in colour. Both front and rear glass elements are unaffected just the metal between the two have the specks.
Has anyone any idea of what it is and what has happened? I'm pretty sure I'm going to send it back to Ffordes and get a replacement but I thought I'd post it up here first.

BTW, the lens is a 150mm Schneider Symmar S

Schneideritis, it's nothing to worry about.

It's the paint they used at the edge of the glass cell, it's very common with older Schneider lenses, it's well away from the image gathering area and has absolutely no detrimental effects..

Schneideritis.

Do a search on the site for this.

If the lens works well, and it should, keep it.

I have two like this, one of which is an enlarging lens.

I also have two reprographic Schneider lenses with this, never a problem and they were used day in day out for close to 30 years.

I believe this might be what is known as Schneideritis. It may not affect your images at all. I would suggest using it before sending it back.

If you do a google search on schneideritis, a couple of threads on the LF photography forum. Here is a link to one of them. http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?t=9976&page=2

Ian, it is true, the delay with the satellite is about 1.2 seconds I believe from here, what is your delay?

Saw the identical time as well.

Thanks very much for the replies. I guess I hit the panick button before engaging the brain and using the search function.

I'm just trying to find the courage to take my first LF photo now, wish me luck!
