I just went through that problem a few months ago with the 8x10 HP5. I got not only light random scratching but also some sort of uneven texture on the base. I tested all sorts of variables from developers to hardner to different wetting agents and finally figured out that if I just skipped the pre soak completely the problem went away.
My pre soak had been in plain water at correct temperature with some agitation for 2 minutes.

I wonder what happened with both snay1345 and nevsky. Both had problems which superficially appeared to be similar. Both seemed convinced that Ilford was at fault, one of them more than the other. Both were offered then chance to send the film back to Ilford

Both were offered several pages of advice by APUGers. The trail then went cold and seems to have remained that way for many months

Did we have as many "cold trails" in the early days of APUG? My rose tinted spectacles suggest we didn't but maybe the "old days" just seem better.

Has anybody considered scratches from the dark slides and holders. I have also had scratches come from guck on the flat plate behind the 35 and 120 mm film in the camera. Guck seems to come from tape holding film to take-up reel, but the scratches are usually continuous. I also had problems with reusable cassettes and rolling my own 35mm.

Testing several sheets of film in the same holder might give an indication for the film holder itself.

I resolved most of my issues with cleaning and care during loading.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try no pre-soak when i shoot my next 8x10 HP5 neg in a few days. Strange that water could be the culprit, but perhaps it's a water-type issue in my area. A friend mentioned that fluoride might be added to the city's supply of water (in Toronto). If the next neg comes out clean, I'll post an update about the results.

..Totally appreciate all the advice on this forum

Yes I have had the same problems exactly as you described with 120 format. Does it show in printing. Different cameras. I thought it might be a ph problem but I did rolls in a water stop bath as well as a dilute stop 15ml per liter. Hopefully it will not show. In a diffused light source but in a condenser?
