Kodak Color Viewing light Selector, P3-180

To properly evaluate color prints, it is best to use a full spectrum light source. With the evolution of high-efficiency lighting it is common that the color quality of artificial lights is deficient. If you are using lights a poor Color Rendering Index while you are evaluating your prints, it is highly likely that when prints are viewed appropriate lighting color balance will not be correct.

Lights can be evaluated using a colorimeter. This is an expensive and complex device.

Some clever people at Kodak devised a simple to use but accurate aid to evaluate light sources. The description provided by Kodak is as follows:

To use this Selector, hold the magenta patch close to the viewing light source. Patch your uniform in color, light source is equivalent to a 5000 K (Kelvin) source adequate amounts of red, green, and the light which result in a high Color Rendering Index (CRI)

For light-source information, refer to ANSI Standard P H2 .30-1989, Viewing Conditions-Photographic Prints, Transparencies, and Photomechanical Reproductions.

Note: if the patch appears to have stripes, light source may not be suitable for viewing color prints or a and illuminating transparencies.

I am not aware of any other manufacturer providing such a tool.

To demonstrate how it works I am providing photographs made under different types of light sources.

I have three of these. I am selling them for $5 each including shipping to a USA address.
