I have used this scanner for a few years without any issues. I routinely cut 36 exposure rolls into 6 strips, 6 frames per strip, and follow the recommended procedure.

Recently, I’ve had frames misalign requiring me to Cancel the batch scan for that strip, eject and re-start the scan for that strip (after resetting the frame counter, etc.). Again, this has been a very rare occurrence, until this week. I had processed a roll of Kentmere 200 (first roll, evaluation, etc.). During the scans I could hear the film hang-up during the alignment procedure, i.e., the strip is advanced, counted, then reversed to ensure that the scan begins at the first frame. Watching through the viewing window, I could see that the frames were out of alignment and I would then cancel and re-attempt the scan. Inspecting the film strips shows nothing abnormal; the film had not been mishandled during development.

I use the SilverFast software for batch scanning (contact sheet generation that produces lo-res jpegs). I re-tried the scanning session with VueScan software just to see what would happen, and obtained similar results—albeit with fewer misalignments. (I suppose that I could re-try the same film strips with CyberScan as well …) . I use a PlusTek 8200i for TIFF generation of individual “selects."

I have several questions:
1) Can this be fixed by cleaning (assuming I could get to the sensors, etc.)?

2) Have others experienced similar problems with this particular scanner? If so, what solutions have they obtained?

3) If the unit is NOT serviceable, should I consider the newer “replacement” by the same Company (I think they have a “newer” version of this unit).

4) I assume that the dimensions, etc., for Kentmere 200 are no different than for other Ilford/Harmon films. I mention this because I don’t believe I’ve ever had similar problems with Kodak films —but this is not conclusive … I’ve had no problems with Ilford’s FP4+ either.

Any insights would me most appreciated.
