The late David Prifti's work is on view at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, MA now through March 2nd, with an opening reception on January 23rd, 7 to 8:30pm.

As some of you may know, Prifti was an APUG member and an extraordinarily good wet plate photographer who died far too young at the age of 50 just over two years ago. He also worked with liquid emulsions on all manner of materials. He's been described by his colleagues as a force of nature, and he was a generous teacher. The Griffin has recreated the look of his studio (I was fortunate to have met him, and was able to visit his studio a few years before he died), and though the space is larger at the museum giving each piece a little more breathing room, his presence can be felt. It's a wonderful show, and the Griffin has done a great job honoring such a gifted artist by bringing so much of his work into public view.

If you are in the Boston area, it would be well worth your time to stop in.

For those who are APUG subscribers, here is David Prifti's immensely powerful APUG gallery: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

And for those who aren't subscribers - the link above is one very good reason to be a subscriber.

I really liked his work. Some of the best on APUG and beyond.

David was a most open, friendly and helpful artist and teacher. It's clear from his shots of his students at the high school where he taught that they felt entirely comfortable with him and that they know that they were collaborators in the artistic process. His work is wonderful. After meeting him at a museum show, I was asked to visit him in his studio or in his classroom. This is one of the things I regret missing more than anything...somehow I never found the time.

An excellent photographer, a dedicated and well loved teacher and a genuinely wonderful person.
