This is a nice kit. I'm sure the answer is no, but would you be willing to trade just the body for a Mamiya C330, 80mm and 180mm lenses?

Hi Tyler! Thanks for reaching out. I would like to keep the kit together as I am really looking to trade/purchase an 8x10 field camera. The C330 is tempting - great system and lenses and one of my favorite photographers, Dianne Arbus used them. So, I'll say no, but it sure doesn't hurt to ask! Have a great night! Paul

hmm, what 8x10 cameras were you looking at? I'm not really there yet, but I've recently come to the decision that I want a different 8x10, and you comment made me go "hmmmm."

HI Abruzzi,

The Stenopeika, the Canham, the Tachihara, the Zone VI are all possibilities. I have used a Deardorf, which is another option. The Deardorf's are nice, but a little on the heavy side, so I would prefer something lighter. I have also used a Calumet C1 which is definitely out since it is really only usable (for me) in the studio. I also borrowed an 8x10 Intrepid for a while and while it is lightweight, I was unimpressed with its rigidity.

What have you tried?

umm from those I have experience with the Calumet, the Tachihara and the Intrepid.

Tachihara movements are pretty close to those on the Intrepid IMHO, although it looks better.

Like you said, the Calumet it pretty darn heavy and yeah, kinda difficult to take it on the road (unless you have a friend that will be willing to haul it for you 😋 ).I often use the Calumet CC-400 (4x5) on both studio and the road and not that bad, but the 8x10 is worlds apart.

I guess I would go Stenopeika or the Canham myself. I tasted 8x10 some years ago and wasn't my cup of coffee. Great image but the trade off of a)heavier/cumbersome equipment and c)higher price of equipment and processing helped me decide on 4x5.

I want the Canham JWC810 (the metal monorail.) It turns out its everything I want in an 8x10 field camera. I didn't even know of it when I bought my Toyo 810MII. The Toyo is an incredible camera but the weight and the bed. I don't like having to drop the bed with ultra-wides (anything wider than 150mm), and of course 15lbs is 15lbs.

My other field is a Gibellini. I got it from someone on LFPF. Its apparently a prototype. It shares more design features with their high end camera, but has a few limitations for me. It handles wides better than the Toyo (through still has issues with a 75mm), but its max bellows is 500mm which is a bit limiting for me (the Toyo goes out to 865mm.) Its also lighter, but not super light.

I also have a Sinar Norma, but even though the 4x5 and 5x7 I can use in the field, the 8x10 just doesn't fold up nearly as compact.

Anyway, I'm very tempted by your kit, but right now I need to outfit for a trip in a few weeks, so my attention and cash is focused on getting a existing MF kit kitted out for the trip. If I had an extra month to shakeout issues and few additional film backs, I'd consider your kit for the trip (Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Romainia), but I'll probably choose one of my Bronicas, or maybe Fuji. If its still for sale whan I get back, and I haven't blown all my money on wienerschnitzel I may look you up. You kit looks like a great deal.

Thanks all! While all thrilling, things like the continued evolution of smart phone cameras and AI software tools, as well as mirrorless cameras with shooting speeds of 120 fps are all fundamentally changing photography. I am glad we have a community here committed to the continued support of analog photography.

Best,

Paul
