I've only bought from J&C a couple of times and I would probably do so again (if I can manage to shoot more the 50 sheets of B&W film in a year). It is just too bad they don't sell Fuji Velvia in QuickLoads; I would buy from them more often.

If J&C continues to raise prices to where they get even close to Ilford, well......

No. neither Ilford or Kodak are advertisers in View Camera. Both of these companies are making a sincere effort at the moment to supply us with the film we want to use. I would like to see that effort rewarded.

Dear Mr. Simmons,

Sometimes, you just don't know when to shut the heck up. While I LOVE Tri-X for my 120 film needs, for the overall health of MY shooting requirements, J&C has done more than any other single film company or outlet in the last 15 years to help me by providing quality Eastern European films in sizes I like to shoot. My photography has improved much more by the access to off sized film and available film speeds than by looking at pitchers in some hoity-toity LF photo magazine I occasionaly browse while shopping at K&S in Palo Alto. I won't mention any names, but said magazine leaves me... confused and disappointed. Perhaps I don't understand 'new view' photography from the last 10 to 15 years, but...

Anyhow, go back to your bitter vindictive little cave and when you have something good to say, let us know. I trust John a hell of lot more than I trust you.

Both Ilford and Kodak are now taking orders for ULF film. Ilford is offereing FP4+ and HP5+. No minimums are required and several dealers around the country can take these orders. Kodak has also shown a more friendly attitude in making ULF film available.

no minimum order but I have to shell out money right now for film I cant get for a good long while. Im not someone who can spend thousands nor hundreds on film at a time. so placing an order for one box of FP4 just wouldnt do me much good as when that one box ran out who knows when the next "order" would be scheduled.

J&C has film in stock if I want to buy 3 months worth at a atime, one month worth, or a single box. Thats a big thing for me. This thread was merely started as to what may have caused such a significant price increase.

Good points Matt, like you I tend to by film a box at a time (or least one box/format). Really don't think JandC increased prices, but that the "film" prices went up...so kind of like at the gas pump when crudes goes up the price goes up, we pay more, when crude drops it drops (all be it not as fast as it seemed to go up but that's a whole seperate post)...if John finds a good deal (even if short dated) he passes the savings on to us. No reason to go bashing JandC, and if I recall...JandC will be one of the retailers that handles both the Kodak and Ilford films. Sorry Steve you really came out looking very bad on this one....in the end your post makes no sense at all.

"The thing that I find remarkeable about Steve's post is that it seems that Steve just can not let go of those situations where he holds a resentment against someone. Steve must think that we have shorter memories then we actually have. My take on this is that Steve has an agenda that has nothing to do with JandC Photo's product availability and level of customer service."

If I had any type of bias I could have easily justified leaving J&C out of the film availability chart. They we so non responsive I had to ask and ask and wait ands wait. However, we worked harder with J&C to make sure they were included. If anyone could claim I was unfair and over protestive it could be Ilford and Kodak becasue I did not work so hard with them.

Having worked closely with John at J&C over the last few months to bring the Kodak deal to fruition there are several things that I feel need to be corrected over what Steve has asserted in this post about their "non-responsive" posture to requests .

I think that it is important to recognize that John has a full time day job in addition to the ancillary film importation business that requires business travel and time away from the office. While it is not a regular event that he is away from the office he has made several trips overseas recently that would have taken him out of reasonable domestic communications and he should not be blasted for these activities. His staff at J&C is very competent in filling orders and the web site provides the number of sheets per box and other pertinent information when you prompt the more information key under them and I have never been in a position to not have all of the information I need to order online in over three years. Comparing huge corporations with a niche market player like J&C is pretty humerous. The reality is that John could give a hoot wheither he gets included in View Camera because he has successfully implemented a business plan and business is good. John is a great person that I am proud to know.

Secondly, I am sincerely appreciative of the selection and the availability of these sheets films that have been made available to the LF and ULF community at prices that have been a blessing. In spite of the fact that there have been rather minor quality control issues, J&C has stepped up with excellent customer service and provided replacement product and has garnered much customer loyalty along the way.

Onward!

I will say in Steve's defense that I have had a couple of emails that took a while to get responses from JandC. It is a fair statement.

that said, they are very high on my list of favored vendors. Very high. I like their products and I like their attitude. My orders have shipped quickly. Their prices are great. Their selection is excellent and growing (show me another purveyor of LF B&W film that can say that their selection is growing!)

I have a feeling that JandC have a real commitment to supplying B&W film. My comparison is a guy on the phone at B&H who was so rude that I just hung up on him.

So JandC aren't big enough to have a guy on the phone or an instant response by email. They are still good people.

I am not dissing anybody.
Saying it doesn't make it so. If you came here to talk about the availability of the Kodak and Ilford films, why did you mention J&C? Why talk about "...problems with delivery and quality controil."? I suppose you meant this little gem as a compliment: "View Camera has had great difficulty getting any info out of J&C as to what they offer, what sizes, and what the box sizes are. This has been going on for over a year." You mentioned them in a feeble attempt at slamming them, and now that you're being called on it you're denying what you did. But the truth is right there, in your first message. You had no reason whatsoever to mention J&C; you only did it to diss them.

steve simmons said:
For example, on the J&C site some of the sheet fils there is no indication of the number o sheets n a box.
Please Steve, stop trying to spread this lie. THE NUMBER OF SHEETS OF FILM IN EVERY BOX FOR SALE ON THE J&C WEB SITE IS SHOWN ON THE SITE. Now, you might have to click on the item to get to the detail page, but the information is there. Or perhaps you think that photographers are sending J&C money, hoping that they might get the amount of film they need. What an interesting world you must live in Steve.

steve simmons said:
when we tried to contact J&C about4x10 sheet film they did not respond to several e-mails
I have never had to wait more than a few days for a response from J&C, and I've asked some pretty off-the-wall questions over the years. Perhaps it's how you worded your questions that was the problem. Or perhaps they don't want to deal with you. I don't know...but I know that everyone I'm familiar with has gotten stellar service from J&C.

When I was researching an article on all of the availble sheet films, all available sizes, both Kdak and Ilford replied wih a complete list amd number of sheets in a box within three days. J&C ook almost two weeks and only told us what sizes but not the numer of sheets in a box. I sent several e-mails to John askig him to call e. He did once repsond that he woud cll but never did.
Let's see...Kodak and Ilford are manufacturers who sell to distributors, so they have to have a parts list available. John is a retailer, so he has a catalog instead. In his case, it's his web site. But you couldn't be bothered to do the work of collecting the data from a freely accessible web site, so he's the bad guy for not dropping everything to format his catalog data the way you wanted it. You weren't doing research Steve...you were just looking for other people to do your work for you.

steve simmons said:
I don't care what people buy.
Plain and simple Steve: If you didn't care, then you wouldn't have mentioned J&C in your original message. Your words in your first message point out what a lie this statement is.

steve simmons said:
Just the facts.
Puh-lease. The facts are that you did try to diss J&C (Don't bother denying it...you didn't have to mention them at all in your post but you did in an attempt to slam them.), you continue to lie about what information is on the J&C web site, and you call asking people to do the legwork of gathering data on film availability "research". Your message contains a lot of words, but is surprisingly devoid of actual facts.
