Postcard Exchange - Round 4

Round 4 of the postcard exchange is calling for participants. Since I was late last round, I thought I'd get in early this time

Current (and new) members will been emailed so no need to reply here. Anyone else with an interest, read on...

We now have 'rounds' of postcards where everyone on the list sends everyone else a postcard during the 'print and post' month which occurs each 3mths (4 times a year). There are currently approximately 20 members. The postcards are predominately B&W prints but there have been alternative processes, but anythings welcome.

The upcoming schedule is :

Round 4
August : Sign On
September : Print and Post
October : Rest period

Rouind 5
November :Sign On
December : Print and Post
January : R&R (from Xmas!)

Just curious...what's the maximum size (internationally recognized) for postcard mail?

That would depend on your own country's postal service. Here in Australia, it's pretty close to a 5 x 7 (inch), which is quite large. It's only the country of origin that matters with respect to size.

I must learn to do all printing in winter, and print enough to last through summer.

Are we printing on 5x7 portfolio paper? Now that postcard paper is not availible.

FYI, I just paid a quick visit to the US Postal Service web site. If we send 5X7s instead of postcards, the postage will be 37 cents as opposed to 23 if sent to a US address. For overseas, it looks like the difference in postage will also be small. A postcard is not smaller than 3.5"X5" and no larger than 4.25X6. I hope that this helps.

I think they're bringing the postcard stock back. In any case, I've got enough for two more rounds in the fridge. Eventually, I'll start printing them 4-up on 8x10" and cutting them down.

What are the guidelines? Are actually taking postcards, ie stamp and address on the back? Or postcard size prints mailed in a envelope. I'd be interested in sending out some 4x5 carbons, but they are too delicate to send uprotected.

Usually we really send postcards with a stamp and writing on the back--it's part of the postcard ethos--but occasionally some people have sent small prints in envelopes, particularly for more delicate processes.

You're really going to print up 30 little carbon prints for this? If that's more than you had planned, you might consider doing the group print exchange (4-6 prints), the blind print exchange (1 print), or the Traveling Portfolio (1 print and you get it back) for the carbons, and just print up postcards for the postcard exchange, much as I'm sure everyone would be delighted to get a carbon print in the mail.

Sure, I'll make a 8.5x11 neg with 4 images. I have a bunch of the B&S tissue left (I prefer my own tissue for my serious stuff). At that point its just 7 or 8 prints that I can run off in fairly short order.

Would everyone like a carbon print?

Since I´ve just defrosted another pack of Ilford post card stock (WHY do we actually use this? It sucks. <g>) and got 1 or 2 packs left in the freezer.... I´m in, once more.

In my case, pure laziness, but I'm getting better at it. Usually the key is using 1/2 to a full grade more contrast than you think you need. It also doesn't hurt for me to do the postcards at the end of a run of more serious prints, so I have a tray of amidol (Michael Smith's formula) handy. The amidol doesn't do enough with MGIV RC to justify mixing it up just for the postcards, but it does boost the blacks a tiny bit, if I happen to have some left over from something else.

Are Bears Catholics? Does the Pope shi... erm... In the... Woods?... Ah, hang on, might have got a bit confused there...

Well, yes! My first Azo print was courtesy of Jim Shanesy's postcard print in the last round (now I know what all the Azo fuss is about - a gem!) so, seeing a carbon print close up and personal would be fantastic too.

FYI - someone in the UK just listed a 100 sheet box of the ilford postcard stock for sale for $22 on photo.net, in case anyone's interested.

As soon as I get definate confirmation as to a date that ilford will again be supplying postcard stock, (hopefully in the next 6 months) I will divy up my stock of postcard paper at cost to those in the exchange. I stock piled 20 boxes, and I still have 19 left.

I took an albumen workshop this summer, so if I can successfully mass produce albumen prints, I'll try one for this, otherwise it will be from my stock of hopefully not so precious Ilford postcard stock!
