Phew! Printed all mine yesterday - 54 of them and a bit of a photographic boot camp - in fact a crash course in printing as I only got my enlarger a few weeks ago and this is only the second negative I've printed!

For a second print, you have done a mighty fine job - I don't recall my early prints to be anywhere near as good and I have to work at getting decent ones now. Doesn't help that I've been using boxes of vintage papers that are older than some of us here.

Ta very much. I did lose about a dozen prints though due to fingerprints and general messiness (didn't realise you can't really touch the surface as you put them under the enlarger). After so many losses, I stopped and got a lot more methodical about it. I think it'll be a little while before a dare to move on to fibre prints.

Fleath, a very nice night photo, great tonality for such a push. Can you tell us your development time?

Avi, excellent urban landscape/architecture image. Do you print borderless or simply trim your borders off?

Ok, this morning I had 5 surprises in my mailbox. 5 Beautiful surprises I would say:

aluk: Château Frontenac, curiously, even if it is just at 2 hours from my home, I never saw this hotel that way. A pin sharp photo, not a lot of details in the sky, but in this situation, it works well for me. Good work !!!

mike c: Clamming at sunset, what a picture. I always like that kind of silhouette, I love the glossy paper. The sky is very nice.

mooseontheloose: Zen photographer, this picture will put a smile on my face for months to come. Details of the texture are incredible.

paul_c5x4: This picture makes me travel into another time. Clarity and sharpness are beautiful. I love it.

Dave Martiny: Street sweeper, it makes me ask myself a coupe of questions about this guy and his life. Pin sharp and a lot of details (look at the shoes). Another nice card.

Thanks guys and gals for sharing all those beautiful images with me. Should start to print mines this weekend, I will do my best to be at your level.

Thanks

First card of round #20 received today:
Looking up from Mick Fagan. A great start of this round. Very nice shot, great lighting. Mick, thanks for your comment about my card from the previous round.

I plan to send my cards earlier than in the last few rounds. I've decided to do two sets this time, and I've already printed one set. All that remains is to decide on which neg to print for the second set, then print it.

Rachelle's postcard arrived a few days ago. that was the wake up call for me to get to the darkroom and start printing, which i did yesterday. today, with the help of my son who designed and printed the labels, my postcards are ready to be mailed. i keep handling the prints with my fingertips, hard for me to think that they will be manipulated by countless people before reaching their destination...!

Just a note that I had the details on the back of my card wrong, I checked my notes (when I could find them...) and it was ID-11 stock (not 1+1), for 14 minutes. I'll check my P.O. Box again today and report back...
My housemates are getting a kick out of it too, I leave them on the coffee table for people to have a look at. Comments from non-photographers are often quite insightful, but so far the best have been "How much do you think it cost them to have these printed?" and "do you think they paid someone to stand there so they could take that?" (clamming at sunset).

I have received three more postcards:

BowBrownie sent a wonderful postcard printed with the contrast to the point. I like it very much.

aluk sent a card of Chateau Frontenac Hotel. Full of finest detail on a fine paper and I would say toned nicely. Perfect fit. I like that one too.

And - phew! - now I also own a copy of The Zen Photographer. Thanks to mooseontheloose.

Hey only a few cards arrived so far and they are already worth the 40 postcards I will send out next week. Great round ... and it is still at the beginning

Cheers

I’ve previously commented on one card (mooseontheloose). Since then, cards from four more APUGers have come in:

aluk - “Château Frontenac Hotel” - interesting outlook, and nice tones in the print
BoxBrownie - “Heart & Hand Pub, Brighton” - sharp and detailed print of a character filled “local”
Fleath - “Chantal at the Tram Stop” - nice moody atmosphere, and a really good job at handling difficult lighting
Mick Fagan - “#20 Looking Up” - an interesting portrait of a beautiful woman

5 down, 23 to go

Thanks to everyone for participating.

Looks like my comments have been eaten by some forum gremlin ;-)

So here they are again :

I received BoxBrownie's view of a pub in Brighton. Great print, and the perspective is well conveyed.

I also got OzPhoto's café shot. The colors (yes it's in color) are great, and the movement perfect, as well as the textures. The framing make the image very dynamic.

Thanks to you two !

Hi Laurent,

Thanks for the kind words - this is one of my favourite commercial film images (and I don't shoot colour very often) also.
Glad they are finding their way around the globe!!

Looking forward to more treats in my mailbox soon.

I've got my second, third and fourth postcard this week:

- Rachelle's picture of a statue: I very much like the square framing of the round faced statue, the crop, the usage of shallow depth of field and also the positioning of the square on the card.
- Steve's photo of a pub in Brighton: Very well printed, I'm getting thirsty, when looking at this photo.
- Alex' tram stop photo from South Australia: Very good night shot, beautiful shades of grey

Two more! Makes checking the mail a lot more fun.

One from Avi (aluk) - My first card from Canada, and a lovely shot. We don't have anything even remotely like that here. Good god it's tall...I like the clouds, especially. They're just very subtle. But I have a thing about clouds.
And another, from Nanette (Ozphoto), her action shot for the cafe. I dig the angle and the shiny cup and saucer, with the drops running down, but the sugar cube makes it for me.

So far:

BoxBrownie Nice pub shot. Rich blacks and good detail.
Mick Fagan Lovely image with nice tones.
mooseontheloose interesting, the statue looks so contented.
aluk another good shot, as a carpenter I'm partial to buildings, and have been doing a series of similar shots of skyscrapers.
mikec well done, like the tones and the reflections off the water.
paul c5x4 excellent job on what appears to be a very high contrast scene, I spent quite a bit of time looking at this one. Also like the paper.
Fleath Wow nice night shot, like the symmetry and really like the paper.
sage nice porch detail well done.
Dave Martiny just a great shot!
RTMoynihan couldn't resist could you.

Well you all are setting the bar quite high,

Thanks for all the great cards,
Roger

Received BoxBrownie's card in the mail yesterday -- a nicely lit scene that reminds me of my one-and-only short vacation to the UK a few years ago. The card arrived in great shape -- like it was hand-delivered!

Well, I've been away travelling and got home on Friday to find a whole stash of great cards
In no particular order ...

Fleath's night shot: the way Chantal is standing with her back to the camera and looking downwards makes it look like a long wait for the tram.
PaulC5x4: you can't beat the tonality of a contact print and even the Home Guard on the stamp fits the vintage look.
BoxBrownie: looks like time for a beer. I like all the street signs. Does anyone know the significance of the FP sign on the wall?
Avi's Quebec hotel has a good camera angle - how high is that place?
MikeC: I like the way the light changes from left to right across the frame, and the people are caught in the transition from day to night.
Dave Martiny: His posture says it all, and the way one trouser leg is pulled up just makes the shot.
Rachelle: So peaceful - that's just what I needed!
Mick Fagan: Really nice high key print.
Ozphoto: Great timing. The drops in the air, the coffee running down the side of the cup, I love it too!

Thanks all.
My cards will be going out in the next week.

cheers
Pete H.

Just about to send my cards out but want to check on one thing... I recieved a card from Dave Martiny (thanks Dave!) but he's not on my list. Is that right or should he be?

So far I've received cards from the following:
Dave Martiny: A great shot, very expressive. Makes me wonder what this man was thinking about at the time.
mooseontheloose: I love seeing Japan (a place I've never visited) through your camera (or the statue's!).
Mick Fagan: I too find the grain of the film (or is it the texture of the skin?), and the overall shot intriguing.
BoxBrownie: A very well printed shot, one that really makes you feel like you're there.

My own postcards are generally printed borderless, though I inevitably end up trimming 1-2 mm off some of them. As for the photo: the building itself is fairly tall, especially (I would imagine) by late 19th century standards. In addition, its imposing stature is compounded by the fact that it's perched on the edge of a cliff, though that's not reflected in my photo...

I received hwv's card last Saturday, very intriguing... The print is full of details, but almost abstract. I think this could be a windmill detail, with the wing blurred by the movement, but it took me some time to come to this conclusion! Thanks !

I also received Avi's view of Chateau Frontenac Hotel, full of details and nicely toned. Thanks Avi !
