Postcard Exchange Round 14 Results and Feedback ...

This round has been outstanding so far. Two more cards arrived at my mail box today.
Rob Skeoch with an exquisite presentation of "Sherman Falls" .Excellent printing. I just wish CP did not print three bar codes on the front, right over the falls I have been to most falls in the escapement, very nice place.
Eric MahWith "Dog in fog". Fog and night scenes are very close to my own photographic interest. Very interesting image. I like it.

Yes I agree about the timing, we have one month to print, one month to send, one month to get over it, one month to get ready for the next round.

I actually printed 30 of my cards prior to the sign up month and printed the remainder last month. Part of the joy of this exchange is the drip feed of cards coming in over about a three month period.

I'm about to go into the darkroom later this morning and one of the things I'll be doing is to think about the next round. It is an ongoing thing with me, and, in some ways, this is a more enjoyable aspect of photography. It's a bit like enjoying food more by prolonging the masticating somewhat, rather than rushing it straight down your gullet!

Funny thing is writing this has reminded my of a little saying my mother used to sing when giving us pocket money, which was actually tuppence on some Saturdays, where we rushed down to the corner store to agonise over how we would spend it. Her last words as we rushed out were to take our time and make our pennies last longer

I received two very nice prints on Friday: A print of a dilapidated building in the Bahamas from Peter Schrager (somebody's dream gone wrong); and a salt print of a lime tree in blossom from Anke Drewitz in Germany. First alternative-type print I've ever seen, let alone held in my hands. I'll have to find out more about this process.

I'm loving this postcard exchange and will definately sign up for the next one. I love the way the cards arrive - some days none, some days 2 or 3. Lots more to come. I find it very inspirational to see what everyone else is doing.

After printing 24 of the 4x5 contact print shot with my Pacemaker and class-M bulbs at a party, I decided it is really not all that great looking. Jacked up neg., jacked up composition. It was my first shot with the new bulbs, so I guessed at the f stop. Used 32 and shoulda used 22. Would have been great with one stop more and as a horizontal. I love it just because I was there, and it's pretty hairbrained, but didn't think it would be very fun for the rest of y'all.

So, out of frustration, and curiosity, I am trying a roll of HP5 35mm processed at a local pro lab, A and I, and chromogenic machine prints. If they look all right, I will pick my favorite 20, and send them off. Yes, that means everyone will get a different exposure (and it will also let us all judge A and I's black and white processing and machine prints!) I have just got too much work in the next two weeks to use my night times printing when I should be sleeping!

I feel it may be fun to leave it to chance anyhow, and put it in the lab's hands, instead of obsessing over the control, and making the perfect print from the perfect neg.

I know we like to hear the technical details, so I will put them here instead of on the card: '67 Nikon F, Nikkor-S 50mm 1.4 (NAI), HP5 at 800 meterless, shot in Los Angeles and Pasadena, CA, U.S.A. July 12 and 13.

Two more cards arrived this weekend:
erikg, nice, contrasty picture. I like the ever-so-ambiguous description (I don't want to spoil the fun for those who have not received the card yet, so that's all I'll say about it). Great!
BlackDog, partly folded, partly torn, thanks to the British and/or Dutch Mail, but still, a nice continuation of the series, I like this abstract look on the world. Shapes, shadows, light. Thanks.

My prints are currently drying. Just printed out the address list, so I'll get started with writing the cards tomorrow.

Just got back from vacation and found some of the most interesting cards I'e received in the post card exchanges. I wanted to talk about at least a few.....

First, Eric Mah's Dog in the Fog. I thought that looked a lot like the Jens Jensen Counsel Rings we have in our neighboorhood. Then, I looked to see that the picture was taken about 10 miles from me and walking distance from work. Then, I took a closer look and realized that I knew exactly where that was since I sometimes help out with classes at Northwestern.
Then, Randy's Dicentra printed on 50+ year old Azo.....simply amazing how long materials can hold up and still have a beautiful image (the neg helps a bit too ) Just curious, was the image tone without toning a cold tone?
And of course, Anke's wonderful image. The print is beautiful. I can't imagine how long it took to get all your cards out. Thank you for the effort and the image.
Lastly, winner in the Humor Catagory is ericg's image of the broken down truck in front of the Hillary sign....together with the commentary. Pays to have that XA with you all the time!

It was slightly a warm tone with the developer used. The Polysulfide changed it to the brown it is.

Received two cards today: Rob Skeoch and Black Dog.

I like the card from Black Dog because it is so abstract (reminiscent of Brett Weston). I like these kind of photographs that can be viewed in any orientation. Good work.

Rob Skeoch's card hints at a the peacefulness of these falls. I can imagine sitting down (after photographing) and enjoying lunch on the banks of this stream.

Did you tone this to give the brown color, or is this characteristic of the process you use?

Darwin, these cards were not toned, I made some trials with Nelson's gold toner, but the result was not convincing me, so there is the pure silver image at the cards. But no card was as the other, every card was a surprise, tones from very dark brown to a light yellowish brown came out and a lot of them failed from to much emulsion. As I wrote earlier, I learned a lot doing this process

I've recieved a little over 20 cards now and would like to thank all those who have sent me a card. Having printed 25 cards at the weekend I am now well aware of the effort you have all put into producing them. I'll get the rest printed this week or the coming weekend at the latest.

All the cards I've recieved are great. A couple of personal favourites are rwyoung's Hobo Duckies, I've been a fan of your pinhole ducks and other toys in the gallery so it's great to get an 'original'. PVia's Contrabassist is such a wonderfully relaxing image, I've no idea why. And Anke Drewitz's 'Lime Blossom' salt print is a fantastic piece of art and a fascinating process.

So thanks again to everyone.

Black Dog with a German bunker in Normandy. Well balanced print. Nice tonality. Would have been nice to know what materials did you use to create it.

Two more received today, for a total of 13: Erik's car (never got the significance of Hillary - that's funny) and Rob Skeoch's waterfall. Erik's has a large stamp on it saying, "POSTCARD - do not attempt to open". Did Erik put that there or did the Post Office? Has anyone ever attempted to open a postcard? Struck me as funny in any case.

1st report

Ive received 8 cards so far, and every one is very interesting, and greatly appreciated.

They include:

david b - his flea market icons - an intriguing set of images - very nicely printed - a square format image that isnt compromised to fit

Mark Fisher - a square image, on a square card - what a great idea - very nice textures, although Im afraid the post office decided to add its own white gouge as well

Buster6x6 - another square image (I sense a theme) - these tools just seem to want to leap off the surface of the print

rst - Im really lucky, because this is the third image Ive received this month from Rüdiger, because he is in my group in the Group Print Exchange. This shot of bicycles in Paris looks like I imagine Paris to be (Ive never been there), although one could imagine that this shot was taken early in the last century, rather than early in this century. The print is wonderfully atmospheric

sly - a beautiful print entitled Snow Drops - almost a contact print I would say - it glows! (I too like the Karsh stamp)

wazza - an interesting almost abstract image that has fascinating curves and shapes and tones. If I didnt see the title Big Top, I probably wouldnt have figured it out. This is another square format image - the trend continues

mooseontheloose - an almost haunted looking Irish scene where the rocks glow. What a nice use of HIE, and a great print too

drpsilver - a wonderfully moody still life with muted tones, and a texture that almost yells old. And another square format!

These are all great - now Ive got to get mine done.

Do you think I should print something square ?

In the meantime I received five more cards. Thanks to Erik for "End of the road..." I like it, it is kind of funny. Also funny is the postcard stamp you put on the back. Then I got a waterfall from Rob. Very nice but somehow Canada post decided to stamp it on the front instead of the back. Maybe they wanted to spare Sir Winston Churchill. And I got another "There is only the drama of the objects and you, watching" card from Jake. Hey, I like it a lot and it is very well printed. Wow, then there is Terrys full of details haystacker card. Very nice. And Ritchie sent Baboons for the kids. Well done.

The more cards arrive the more this turns out to be the best round I ever participated in. I received 23 cards so far, so there are still 27 to come.

Well, at least you are still lucky, ask Mike who was now for the second time my Group Print Exchange mate and we also shared the same group in the Lith Print Exchange. He must be really bored of me. And thank you for the kind comments on my card. I think this is a woderfully atmospheric place. At least in the early morning.
