Hi Everyone,

Kodak's Verichrome Pan black and white film is long gone, but a few rolls are still floating around in people's freezers. And some writers here on Photrio have developed rolls that they found in old cameras. I did not use it when it was current, but a friend sent me a roll, which looked great. In 2022, I bought two rolls from an eBay seller. One was perfect but the other hopelessly thin and ruined. Now I wish I had stocked fresh rolls in my freezer when Kodak discontinued the product.

Let's post examples from new work, your archives, or found film.

Here are three examples from Mississippi and Louisiana taken in the blazing June heat in harsh, glarey light. I used my Rolleiflex 3.5E camera with 75mm ƒ/3.5 Xenotar lens. Praus Productions developed the film in Xtol.

These are not captured by me, but were in an old Yashica Mat 124 I got at an estate sale. The serial number for the camera seems to be 1971. I have no idea how old the verichrome pan film was or how long it was in the camera. It seemed to hold up well to cool development in HC-110 (e). I can tell it was a film with great tonality.

Photographed on Verichrome Pan with the Medalist II
I think the new 100 ASA Kentmere 120 is a lot like Verichrome.

I can't even remember which prints i have from VP.....but it was a great very versatile film....forgiving of exposure inaccuracies. I liked it in 120..... FP4+ is a pretty good substitute these days.

Here's a one that came from an 828 roll of VP found in a Kodak Pony 828:

Here's one from a roll of Verichrome Pan that expired in the 60's that I shot with a Vest Pocket Kodak:

And here's two shots that were taken on Verichrome (not Pan) that expired in May 1936 with a No.2 Brownie. Oxygen exposure damaged the edges and the emulsion stuck to the backing paper in one spot, but I was surprised by the image quality those defects aside.

I also have a couple rolls of 122 Verichrome Pan from the final run in 1974 that I have shot in a No.3A Autographic Kodak Special, but I don't have a way to digitize those massive (5 1/2") negatives.

Here are some pictures I took in the mid -80s of an abandoned cliff house in Encinitas, California. I shot with my Mamiya C330f and 120 Verichrome Pan. I think it is likely the only time I ever used this film. The lighting outdoors was somewhat hazy. I suspect I used the 80mm f2.8 and possibly the 55mm f4.5.

Recently I got a few well preserved Verichrome Pan in 116 and 122 roll, all expired in 1970s. I shot them at ISO 25, and developed in Rodinal 1+25 for 6min at 68F. All the negatives came out excellent, a bit base fog but no mottling whatsoever. The VP film were factory wrapped in sealed aluminum foil, which shields them from moisture, air, and light. I'm quite amazed at how well they stood the test of time!

This was from film in a Kodak 2A Brownie box camera.

I developed it in a homemade developer I use for developing very old film. (Unfortunately, I didn't completely cover the film, so one edge didn't develop - shame on me.) This is the Christman Bridge in Ohio. It's noteworth that the bridge is now completely surrounded by trees.

So that film had been in that camera a while.

Absolutely Cool!! I love it. I have a few 122 spools and backing paper. If I was a billionaire I would bring back 122 and postcards. Excellent work!
