This works very nicely. Kept my eye on it for a bit and really like the simplicity and the composition.

Saw the top of these palms sticking up over a drop-off, a distance from the road. An odd thing to see in the middle of the Death Valley. I made my way over trying not to leave permanent or long-lasting tracks, and found this. It took awhile to find the best view and get a good balance of elements, light, and shadows.
It was, as usual, dang hot. Behind me and the camera was the breath of Death Valley, with the dunes to the southwest. As I said, an odd place...flowing water, non-native palms (I believe), and such. I created an active balance -- feels a little off balance, yet doesn't. I do not want the viewer to be too comfortable here.
I returned here 3 years later to find the palms burnt, the top broken off the tall palm -- I'll have to check them out again some day.
From last summer on a rainy-ish day. I brought the rz67II with me, hiked in about 2 or so miles. Backing paper mottling issues. Thanksfully, my xd-11 was with me. 24-35mm rokkor, hp5+. Little gritty but happy with this. Savage Gulf, TN overlooking Big Creek Gulf.
Thank you kindly! I got very similar feedback (the painting aspect) from a photog friend on our local group.I like this very much, it fascinates me. It has the feel of a very complex pencil sketch, or a b/w photo of an oil painting, and yet it’s a photo. Lovely composition. Super.

No apologies needed and I appreciate your words. Your rework is very nice. The first image more represents what it was like when I was there (very foggy, humid, rainy) which is probably why the processing was minimal and stayed that way but yours is more "technically" correct (is that a thing?) or rather what I think of when I think a B&W image. Anyways, I appreciate the dialogue.I really like this photo. And not because it resembles a painting but because it is a very good photo. Even if I edit it a bit to get rid of that painting effect it still remains a very good photo:
P.S.1. This is very personal but I hate it when someone tells me that my photo looks like a painting.
P.S.2. I apologise beforehand for sounding a bit harsh, since I know this is not the right place and is just a thread of appreciation of our photographs but I wanted to take the opportunity to appreciate a photograph on simple photographic merits.

Thanks and I have hiked that trail as well on this trip. It was my wife's return to hiking post chemo, bald head and all. It about did her in so when I hiked the next day up to the top of Guadalupe Peak, she decided to stay at the camper.Cool shot Jon! Brings back memories. I guess those mountains are Permian rocks and 250 million years old. Was there 30 years ago and hiked the Mckittrick trail in the fall which was outstanding.
Thank you! Far west Texas is a place I love. I could go back to Big Bend area over and over. We have unfortunately curtailed our travels the past 5 years. Every 6 months we took a grand trip to a NP. We both came to with C**id in late 2020 on our trip to the Keys to go to the Everglades, Key Biscayne and Dry Tortugas. All the rentals in place. It was a bust. The only thing we got to see was Clyde Butcher's studio driving in. The next day we were not feeling well, stayed in for a few days, turned around and drove home. My wife has not been doing well since. However, we are determined to get back to it and are headed to Arcadia NP this August. Gonna shoot a lot film there.Another nice one, Jon. I know all too well about those severely clear days with the TX sun beating down on ya. I still need to get out to this park!
