Possible problem with Nikon F100?: F100's film counter problem

Hi,

I just finished shooting my first roll of film today with my Nikon F100 and I noticed something weird.

I was shooting on Fuji superia 300 which contains only 24 exposures. However, after the 24th shot, the film counter in the nikon F100 display didn't say "end". Instead, the camera continued to show that there were more exposures... and it allowed me to shoot all the way up to 26 shots until it said "end".

Is there a possible problem with the camera (or the film)? Did I put the film incorrectly in the slot? Did my film even capture all my exposures?

Again, thanks for helping me out with all my beginner questions!

properly loaded 24 exp film will get you 26 exp. and 36 exp film about 38-39 exposures.

Nearly all rolls of film have a couple of more shots in them than rated (if you load the film efficiently).

Unless you have some way of telling the camera that you have a 24-shot roll inside, it has no way of knowing that that should be the "end": it can only tell when the film won't advance anymore (the real end).

Usually yes (some labs cut into the very last exposure).

If the film is loaded inefficiently, then you might really get only 24. The companies probably do that to make sure people never get a chance to complain about the rolls being only 23 or 35 exposures long...

With F100 you can change the settings so that the camera will rewind automatically at the end of the roll. No need to worry about frame numbers.

My FE2 does have an irritating frame number feature too. It won't meter before the frame counter is on number 1. Grrr...

Totally normal. And yes, your 25th and 26th exposures will work, though the final one as usual runs the risk of being partially cut off.

Film producers err on the side of a little more rather than less as it's in their interests to do so. If they advertise 24 exposures and you get 26, it's bonus. If they advertise 24 and some only come out 23... the customer has a legitimate grievance. Not worth it even in these days of slimmed down production to be chinzy here.

I had a 24-exp roll of Fomapan 100 in my F100 that kept going to 29. I got concerned because I was only used to getting a couple extra frames at most. I got all 29.

I used to have a Konica Auto S3 and the camera had quite a short distance between the take up spool and the film canister, this meant I'd always squeeze an extra 4 shots out of a roll (00, 0 & 37, 38).

Because then they would need to be a bit longer (actually 28 and 41 exposures to make up for the people who wind on a bit too much leader.

However, if you have a 24 exposure roll loaded and the counter gets up to 47 (like it did when my wife was using one of my cameras) then you have a problem!
