Hello NZ apugers it looks like we have a good size group forming. I am thinking about flying down to Christchurch in late January to see the Ansel Adams exhibit:

http://www.christchurchartgallery.org.nz/Exhibitions/2005/AnselAdams/

"Legendary American photographer Ansel Adams’ images of the natural world reveal a lifetime devoted to capturing its changing beauty. This exhibition presents a selection of photographs the artist considered his best."

John McCallum mentioned he would like to go as well. Maybe we could get a group together, see the exhibit, then have a day shooting?

I'd say 3 are pretty much confirmed and maybe a few who have not seen this thread yet so I can email them. Once we get 5 or so confirmed we can work out a date that suits everyone.

3 huh, thats good - the way my work usually works out I couldn't confirm until about a week beforehand

I was actually interested to know how many Kiwi APUGer's there were all together tho -

I see ones I hadn't seen before in the forums every now and again - its always interesting

Ever thought about putting up APUG flyers and/or wotnot around the place like Auckland Camera, Labtec, MIC etc... ?

There may be more of you in Auckland, but how many here in Wellington? I am itinerant, only here for a couple of months a year, although I am a kiwi.

I visited the AA exhibition on Boxing Day (December 26 for the uninitiated).

Very well presented in a great gallery. This is the touring "Museum Set" of prints which have been well looked after. I have previously seen smaller selections exhibited elsewhere, but this is a more comprehensive collection.

Another wandering Wellingtonian here. We are in Amsterdam at the moment, but will be moving back to Wellington this year - beginning of April, timed brilliantly so we get two winters in a row

Ok. looks like John will be down there for a few days this weekend and I just booked my flight today. I will be there on Saturday the 28th from 12:00pm then flying out Sunday around 11am. My current plan is to see the show, and do some Christchurch street photography. I know it's short notice but if anyone else thinks they might be around PM me and I'll get my cellphone number to you. I am majorly looking forward to seeing this collection!

Bump.

Well Sean and I are scheduled to be in Chch early Sat morning and leaving Sun mid day. We'll be immersed in the exhibition of top 50 Adams prints for the Sat afternoon (without doubt, as long as they're open).

We have a few who expressed interest. Anyone else wishing to joining us; just drop me a msg for arrangements.

Cheers, John.

I got back a few hours ago, pretty exhausted but what a trip! The exhibit was absolutely incredible. Also John, Kathy & her family were a joy to hang out with. I had only seen two lesser known Adams prints in real life before and to see 50 of his best was overwhelming to say the least. There were a few that John and I must have stared at for hours in awe. The reproductions truly miss the glow and much of the amazing tonal scale and depth in the real thing. I'm not sure where the exhibit is headed next but it is a must see. Now... off to check emails and 750 new posts since my last visit

Welcome back Sean. I sure wish I could have joined you; I love Christchurch, and of course, Ansel Adams prints are simply stunning close up.

Superb!

I am back too and can only echo the enthusiasm and sentiments expressed by Sean. It was just wonderful to view the actual prints of a photographer I have long admired....and yes they were just so much better in reality than any reproductions I have seen in before. Just wow!

Thanks Sean and John for being such great company...my family and I had a wonderful time.

Thoroughly enjoyable trip. Fine exhibition of the highest order! Great to share it with Kathy and Sean. As soon as we get the videos out of the pesky digi-gizmo .... I'll pop them up.

Greetings NZ from Hong Kong!

I saw the show shortly before I left the country (was saying goodbye to family in ChCh). I had gone of AA in a big way before seeing the show, but was actually drawn into a few of his images and left with a better appreciation of his skills.

He really loved that red filter didn't he ....

Anyway

I'm with you on that one...........I saw the museum set in Wellington many years ago........simply breathtaking.

But now I have a little more experience in photography, for my taste he uses the red filter too much and prints a bit hard. Would love to see some of his negs.

Is it hot up there in HK?..........are you shopping for LF?

Yes, he used the red filter to effect. But it certainly works for me in the likes of 'Monolith'. Surely it takes some confidence in one's vision to apply a filter like that to snow and granite, when you a half way up a mountain with 100lbs of gear in winter. (Not like you could nip back the following day because it didn't quite work, or the exposure was a little off).
I believe he also used a wratten yellow a great deal; in 'Aspens' for example.

Seeing an exhibition of twenty or twenty five images would probably have enough. But seeing the fifty images he regarded as his best together in one place, gave an appreciation of the depth his achievements. They had to kick us out after closing time on the Sat!

Happy New Year to you too David!

Regards, John.

Hi Guys

Clayton, it's not that hot up here, high 'teens, early 20's, but with high humidity, so it can feel a bt cold at times. Summer will be different......

Have seen some large format stuff here, lots of leica's in the camera shops and a truck load of digital... Seen a resonabile number of people out with medium format stuff, Rollei 6000 series stuff and Mamiya 6 - 7 seem popular.

Got the large format gear coming over on the boat, seen some suff that might make a good exhibition, but, as one of the curators I was speaking to here the other day said, "Hong Kong is a very photographed city".
