Heading out to Portugal at the end of September - Will be spending five days in Porto/Gaia and looking for suggestions of quirky and unusual spots to visit that are accessible by public transport. Already plan on riding the Linha do Douro and visiting Miramar beach along with the obligatory wine cellars

I cannot offer any insider knowledge but don't miss the Center Português de Fotografia which is situated not far from the old town (Ribeira)! It is a beautiful building and if you are lucky you will get to see a beautiful exhibition on top. I happened to see a marvelous exhibition of the works of the great Spanish photographer Francesc Català-Roca there a couple of years ago.
