I just got a quote back from archival methods for some custom portfolio boxes for matted 7x17 and 12x20 prints. There are a few large film shooters who have expressed interest in purchasing a few of these, and if we can get our orders up to 20 boxes in each size, we get a significant price break.

I have had boxes made by this company in the past, and they are very high quality, and comparable to the 'normal' sized boxes available from Light Impressions and others.

I have sized the boxes so that the nominal film size can be contact printed and matted with a 4 inch border. They will hold 10 matted prints per box when matted with 4 ply matboard front and back. Ten prints is really about all you will feel like carrying around when they are this size.

Here is the breakdown:

Size: 15-1/4 x 25-1-1/4 x 1-3/8”

Qty. 10 @ 73.50 = $735.00

Qty. 20 @ 64.50 = $1,290.00

Size: 20-1/4 x 28-1/4 x 1-3/8”

Qty. 10 @125.00 = $1,250.00

Qty. 20 @ 75.50 = $ 1,510.00

As you can see, the boxes sized for 12x20 prints show a huge drop in the unit cost when going from 10 to 20 boxes. Anyone interested in participating in this sort of purchasing co-op can email me directly.

Thanks,

Clay Harmon

No, the pricing is for each size. No mixing and matching. According to Dennis Inch, the archival methods president, the big expense is setup, so making the first box is pretty expensive, with subsequent boxes being just more of the same. I am committed to 5 of the 20x28 boxes, and I am guessing I will have another 10 committed from people I have already contacted. If we can reach the 20 number, everybody wins. My thought in opening this up to these forums is that somebody who just wants one or two can get the benefit of the lower unit cost, and at the same time help the bigger purchasers. A few of us did the same thing a few months ago with 12x20 film sleeves - the minimum order was something like 1000, but we got enough people together to make it happen. Logistically, one person (probably me in this case) will place the order and 'be on the hook'. When the order is finished, I would collect the money, and then give archival methods the shipping information. I would propose that we have archival methods ship them directly to the proper people to save me the hassle of 'breaking bulk'. I am sure they would have a better shipping rate as well.

just an FYI, have you checked the drop front boxes at this location;

Dead Link Removed

I got several for a project I was working on. They are the same as the Light Impression drop front box, except the color which is gray. A lot cheaper. Less than $ 10 for a box that will hold 22 X 28" prints. They are not the black portfolio box, which may be what you are talking about. I got 3 for a bit more than one would cost at Light Impressions.

This may not fit your needs but just wanted to pass along the information .
