POP or Albumen Paper Commercially Available?

I was wondering if either of these are available pre-made. I have a two fold interest. First I'm a fan of Atget's work and love the look of his prints. Second, I'm looking for a method that can be used in daylight such as these were. If these are not available is there anything similar? I know you can coat your own but I just don't have a desire to. I would be contact printing from 4x5 or 8x10 negs.

POP and albumen papers were often expsed in daylight because of their UV sensitivity. But they were not "Used" in daylight or they would be fogged.
If you want to emulate Atget, or any other photographer of the period, you must begin by making negatives which are similar to those of the time. An overwhelming number of these were made utilizing orthochromatic film or plates, not panchromatic.

Thank you Jim. I understand how they were used, I should have worded my inquiry differently. I meant papers that could be exposed using sunlight. Are there any available that worked in a similar fashion?

If you want to get into albumen, the first piece of equipment you might want to invest in is a chicken coop!

Albumen paper, when it was a commercial product, was just albumenized paper that still had to be sensitized in a silver nitrate bath and dried before using it. After that, it starts turning brown after a day or so. Not having to coat the albumen saves some labor, but it's still not a ready-to-use product like ordinary silver gelatin paper. If someone were to sell sensitized albumen paper, they'd have to make it to order, dry it so it's ready before an available shipping slot, and ship it by whatever the most expensive method available is.

The albumen paper that we sell at Bostick and Sullivan is egg white gelatin machine coated on rag art paper. We do them in large rolls and it stinks to high-heaven. That being said, you apply some silver nitrate, expose, tone or whatever you would like. They turn out great. Here's an example of one donated to the photo-review auction a few years ago. If memory serves me right, it's toned in gold.

Klainmeister -You say you do them in large rolls. I know you are selling 48" long paper. Can you make longer paper lengths with your set up? 6-10 foot lengths?

It's something that has been discussed, but at the moment unavailable. I guess if there was enough demand it's something we could look into. The truth is that getting an even and consistent coating of eggwhite on paper rolls is a lot trickier than it sounds. I can talk to Dick about it because we might be re-tooling some equipment this winter (too busy with APIS and other events rights now) and I don't see why not. Well, except getting rolls that size is becoming more difficult.

As for the 48", I suppose you could call up and talk to Dick or Melody and find out if they'd do a special cut. I believe the width is 48" so if you're looking for 60x48" for example, I believe it would be doable.

Is B&S albumen paper double coated or single? When making albumen paper I find better results when I double coat. This requires the first coating to be hardened in an alcohol bath before applying the second coat. Robert
