Square in french is "carré" thus "Karré" and thus "POLKarré" the name of this new idea of a pinhole camera !

I had a Kiev88 back for square format on 120 film that I did not use. I designed and made a prototype pinhole camera on the following new design :
POLKarre.jpg

Instead of a round hole, it intersects two 0.2mm orthogonal slits, the vertical slit being at the fixed distance of 50mm from the film plane and the horizontal slit being mobile between 50mm and 100mm. So when both slits are at the same focal distance, the camera is like having a square pinhole of 0.04mm², but when they are at different focal distance (say 50mm for the vertical slit and 100mm for the horizontal slit) it is like the focal would be 50mm horizonally (normal) and 100mm vertically (telephoto).

Thus the camera behaves like it would with the kind of anamorphic lenses that are used to reframe cinemascope images on the classic 4/3 frames.

Here is my prototype :

And here an example of the resulting square images from my first test film :

Both slits at 50mm___________________________________________ Vertical slit at 50mm and horizontal slit at 100mm__________
