Polaroid Type 52

Was just wandering if anyone knows if the coating that is supposed to be applied separately to Type 52 b&w polaroid photographs is an option or is it required for some sort of image stabelization? As far as I can tell it is simply for putting a glossy finish to the print. I exposed some for the first time today and got some nice images, but the coating left bumps and grooves from the applicator that I did not like, however I do like the glossy finish. Just curious and thanks for any info.

Hi Chuck. The coater is necessary for permanence and is not just a pretty face. I find that if you just waste the first few strokes of the coater on some other surface first, it seems to then work better. It's like there is too much solution going on to the print and you need to thin it out a bit. Use several long even strokes in a dust free environment and it should be ok. Good luck....Tony

The coating is required if you want the print to last. Without coating the image will deteriorate and end up looking like solarization.

The primary function of the coating is that it removes and neutralizes any residual reagents from the developing process. These trace reagents are what attack the image tones. The second function is that it leaves behind a tough polymer layer that permanently protects the image silver.
