Cocking and firing in one stroke is indeed what self cocking shutters do, but they should also complete the shot (close) without you having to let go of the release. I would exercise it a lot, and if that doesn't work, maybe a CLA, if the cost is not prohibitive. You could only use it for relatively long exposures, since you probably can't push and release much faster than about 1/50 of a second. With large format this is not an unreasonable suggestion -- many of my shots are between 1/10 of a second and several seconds.
