Hey guys and gals,

I just purchased a model 440 on eBay. The user said it looks like it's in great condition, but is unsure if it is functioning. Heck, for $9.99 and free shipping, who could resist?

I'll be receiving the camera soon and was wondering what are some things I should take into account while "testing" the camera. This is my first polaroid (well, first vintage polaroid) camera, and have I have never used something similar to the pack-film models.

Are there some tests that I can do without having to put some film through it? And once I do make some test shots, what should I be looking for to see that everything is functioning properly?

Thanks for your help,

Jason

Jason,
Here is what I do. I believe the 440 has an electronic shutter, like most all of the 100 to 450 series. If so, the shutter will NOT operate without working batteries. If it has a battery in it, oen the back, exposing the lens from behind. Cock the shutter by depressing the lever on the right. Set the film speed to the slow (75) setting. Then point the camera into a relatively dim lit area and snap the shutter. You should see the round aperature exposed for a fraction of a sec. up to several seconds (depending on how dark it is). Now take it outside and cock and snap the shutter again, and you should see the round aperature for an instant only. If both tests are successful, you are ready to test this baby with film. If you only see the plastic carrier move from right to left, the battery is dead. You will have to find a new one, or do what I do which is convert to AAA batteries, or something available today.

Thanks Steve! That is great advice.

If I remember correctly, you modify cameras to take standard batteries? If I cannot find a replacement battery and you do offer this service, I'll drop you online. If you could PM me with some details about your service, that would be great too (ie: cost  ). Also, how long would a AAA battery live on a vintage Polaroid?

Jason,
My 330 uses a 3v shutter battery needing snap on attachment points. I just used a 3v lithium camera battery and duct taped the leads to the battery. It has been working for over a year. Also, make sure the rollers are clean. Use a damp rag and warm water to clean them.

Thanks Anscojohn. I'll have to look through a manual if I can find one online to check and see what the rollers are .

I'll also have to research and see which batteries the 440 takes!

Jason,
I believe the 440 takes a 532 3 volt battery. Good luck finding any at a reasonable rate. How long the AAA's last depends, I'm sure, on how often you use it, but when you can buy them for $2 or so for a four pack at any grocery store - who cares? If you can't find a battery (or don't want to pay the price), I can convert your 440 to AAA's for $20 plus return shipping of $10 max (depends on zip code).

The rollers someone referred to are the ones inside the film compartment that break the little chemical pod and thus distribute the chemicals over the film when you pull it out. They should be washed frequently to keep them clean.

Thanks Steve. I paid more for the battery than I did for the camera! Well, the total for the battery + shipping ended up being around $11 dollars, but the camera was $10 with free shipping.

I hope this battery lasts me at least a few months
