Polaroid 600 Colour Rendition

I just shot a pack of the new SX-70 film. One of the pictures was of a black eyed Susan flower and the film was incapable of reproducing the coloring out to the tips of the pedals.

The color was fine, if unsaturated in the center to about half way out to the edges, which then abruptly transitioned to pale yellowish white.

I don't think its quite there yet...

Yes, I saw the same thing with the pack of SX-70.

If this film is the new Polaroid Originals (formerly Impossible Project) the incorrect color is surprising, considering that the Impossible film didn't have problems with green.



Is this 600 film a recent batch?

I just bought mine last week...I don't see anywhere on the box indicating expiration or batch number.

See the side; as in below...

The foil pouch, which I discarded, said "Impossible Project" stamped on the side. Wonder if they are repackaging old stock?

My box of SX-70 (which I shot a few weeks ago) has the same dates at yours. My blue box of Colour 600 is stamped 11/18. The darkslide says "The peanut butter to my jelly" and is dated 08/20... What's up with the two dates?? The darkslide shows the expiry date, and the box when it was packaged, I guess...

Those colours are just waaaaay too off for my liking. I hope Impossible/Polaroid can fix this. I'll be picking up Instax wide and film when I'm in Japan next year. The colours are beautiful.

Yes, I think that is correct, although the expiry date should be the same.

Yeah, I was really shocked at how bad it was and decided my SX-70 Sonar might head over to Ebay soon...

I'll keep my old SX-70, hoping that the film will improve. They've been at it for several years and still not there.

Man, don't sell the SX70. In my experience, you need to shoot the film as soon as you can after buying it. Any packs that I let set around (in the camera or otherwise unrefrigerated) had terrible color. I guarantee you that if your batch set in a hot truck or warehouse for any amount of time before your local Best Buy ended up with it, that messed it up.

They may have improved the formula, but the packs I've used have had very short-lived shelf life.

By the way, this is true of the sx70 and 60 film, from my expereince.

Looking at that photo, I think the film sees the petal colors differently than we do. At first it looks like there's only a small central region that has the saturated yellow, however if you look at the curved petal at the 7:00 position, you'll see that the saturated yellow ends halfway along the petal, just like all the other petals (i.e. halfway). That is, the saturated region isn't a property of the center part of the film, but of the petal itself. If you look at the petal at 6:00, you'll see that it still has saturation where it extends below the non-saturated 7:00 petal.

Also the 10:00 petal has saturated yellow along its upper edge all the way out to the end and the 4:00 petal seems to have yellow at its very tip.

So I believe this is some sort of spectral phenomenon, revealing what the film is sensitive to compared to our vision.

I shot it 2 days after getting it in the mail as a present. Maybe it got hot, but that's the only way I can get SX70 where I live.

Here's the 3 shots I have left (gave the others away before I got a scan). Epson V750, no sharpen, auto exposure, auto white balance.


1. Flower - partial shade, high noon.
2. Sky - opened up a bit to avoid under exposure.
3. Cat - used a flash bar.

Yeah its not great photography, but I was trying to push it to see what I could get.

I bought mine from Kerrisdale Camera, in the mall. It went directly from there into my camera. I have some left in camera, which is sitting in a 20C room. What it went through to get to the camera shop, I know not. Nice shots, Kino.
