I am considering the Plustek OpticFilm 8100 or 8200i film scanner and wonder what people's experience with different slide mount thicknesses has been on these scanners.
Plustek tells me that the optimal slide mount thickness is under 1.0mm. This seems very thin. Were the old Kodachrome and Ektachrome cardboard slide mounts this thin? I would think that cardboard slide mounts would be perhaps between 1.0mm and 1.4mm. Most plastic slide mounts that I know are 1.4mm to 2.0mm thick. I think the main remaining plastic slide mounts are the Reflecta CS2, which are 1.8mm thick. The Kaiser C.A.M-System-CS slide mounts are the same as the Reflecta CS2.
Has anyone had good luck scanning film in the plastic slide mounts that are between 1.4mm and 1.8mm thick? I know these scanners have a fixed focus, so it seems like the thickness of the slide mount could affect the quality and sharpness of the scan. But perhaps there is enough depth of field to accommodate some variation in slide mount thickness.
I would expect a scanner to handle most slide mounts under 2.0mm, but maybe that is not the case. If these scanners really do best with slide mounts under 1.0mm, then maybe it is a good idea going forward to just leave transparency film unmounted in strips of six and use the film strip holder instead of the slide holder. But I do like to have the transparencies in slide mounts.
