I just bought a 7600i, in the hope of scanning my black and white film.

As a reference I have the scans from a Nikon Coolscan 5000ED, sold long ago.

The new scans show a remarkable loss of resolution, fine details are basically gone.

I imagine that the fact that the plustek does not have a focusing feature, automatic or not, causes it not to focus so the details are lost.

Problem is the next good scanner is a Hasselblad, with its associated price.

Ideas?

get a good used or refurbished Nikon LS-5000, 4000, or even a 2000. They are still remarkably good scanners.

what are you scanning? Happy to take a neg and scan on an Epson for you to compare with that option.

Otherwise, the Nikon's are pretty dam hard to beat, and close to the drum scan option if you ask me

Sorry to bump but I was thinking of getting a Plustek... key word "was"... until I read this thread.
Would be curious to see how it compares to Epson scanner since that's what I'm using now.

The Plustek should be able to do a much better job than what you are reporting, unless there is a problem with it. Several recent reviewers have come away reasonably well impressed - LL for example.

I'd consider taking it back and exchanging it.
