Okay, for my final english project I am doing a "personal research topic" related to our intended major in college, for me that is photography! I decided to compare and contrast the two schools of Straight and Pictorial Photography. Now here is my question, I need to have a direct contact source for my research. So I wanted to know if I could ask someone a few questions about straight and pictorial photogrphy. I ask that this person knows a fair amount about both. I would be pm-ing this person with the questions that I will try to think of by tonight or tomorrow. I would truly appreciate any and all help with this, and also, if anyone has any good sites for information. Thank you all very much.

Hi Grant,

I can't help you out with any modern examples. You may find it interesting to find out about the birth of 'straight' photography (at least in the U.S.) and the Group f64. Ansel Adams, Edward and Brett Weston, Imogen cunningham and several other photographers formed Group f64 to battle against the Pictorialists.

Here's a short piece that may help you get started:

Good Luck on the English project!!!!

Thanks Murray, that's a good link. I already have most of my staright photography side written, and I've been reading up on pictorialism a bit. If someone could spare a quick 10 or less minutes to answer a few questions I would be greatly appreciative (I need to have a "direct contact" source, so even if this person is relaying info that is available on the internet, I still have to put down that I was in direct contact with someone). Thank you.

Grant,

Why don't you just ask the questions publically and perhaps someone will step up to the plate? Your questions may also spark an interesting dialogue.

I'm not an expert on Pictorialism but I'm keen on it and have an interest in people like George Seeley and Anne Brigman, etc., and I suspect many others may find themselves similarly knowledgeable on certain figures or aspects of the Pictorialists. I also have some classic books like Paul Andersen's texts, Sadakichi Hartmann's composition book, almost a complete collection of Mortensen, and various monographs or exhibition catalogues on several Pictorialists.

No, I can use the library- I've gotten a lot of good info out of Beaumont Newhall's book "The History of Photography" there is a chapter on both Pictorial and Straight photography.
And that is a good idea Joe, and I should have thought of that first... thanks.
