I slipped in a test of the 120 TMY-2 while printing paltinum today. I was of the impression that it wasn't supposed to work as it is UV coated. But it worked fine. I had shot a side by side test with the new TMY and the old TMY and processed them both in Xtol and made RC contacts and they were basically identical except that the TMY-2 had just a bit more contrast. I printed them together in platinum today and they showed the same relative difference as they did on the RC contact. The TMY-2 was just a bit contrastier. And they printed at the normal printing time.

So it makes me wonder if perhaps the UV coating comes off in processing. I know there is some apprehension about whether the sheet film will have the UV coating or not and according to my 120 film test it doesn't matter if it does or doesn't. Of course there is the chance that the batch of TMY-2 120 I got is for some reason not UV coated. It definitely says TMY-2 on the film. And the UV coating is the most likely reason for the extra contrast as I shot the test in bright sunlight.

Anyway that is the report from my basement.

What light source did you use to expose the negatives on platinum? Also, what was your mix of platinum and palladium?

I printed under florescent tubes for 7 minutes and actually I only used palladium for the test. I was just seeing if it would work. Is it more likely to work in Platinum vs Palladium?

TMax400-2 (TMY-2) does not have the UV layer in it. It is only TMax100 (TMX) which has the UV layer.

When I first learned about the new TMY-2 I was told that the 35mm and 120 versions of the film would have a UV layer, but that the sheet film would not. However, the new TMY 120 film, which I was asked to test, does not appear to have a UV coating, or if so, it is much less actinic than the coating on Tmax-100 film. When I measure the UV density of TMY and the test film, OOO, developed at the same time in the same developer, the B+F density of the OOO film measures about log 0.10 higher (1/3 of a stop), even though the overall contrast of this film is lower than TMY. If this is indeed due to a UV coating the effect is much less than that of TMAX-100, where the B+F density with a UV densitometers measures about log .90, or three full stops.

The TMY-2 in LF that I have tested in 4X5 size, definitely does not have a UV coating.
