I am looking for cheap plain camera straps. I do not like padding, swivels, grippy materials, or clasps that release. The perfect strap is the one on my Canon. Oddly, I can't find these anywhere.
I have been considering trying to make one out of a dog leash. I have also seen homemade straps made from slippery white rope, but I don't know how to do the ends.
Bought a Gordy plain black horizontal strap with black thread several years ago and it is great. Couldn't be plainer and gets better the more it gets broken in. Highly recommended
I made a few straps from braided paracord a couple of years ago. I adapted a pattern for a rifle sling I found online. Only snag is that they're not adjustable, you need to decide the length before you start. You also need a jig to hold the strap rings the right distance apart so your weaving can be kept under control, otherwise you'll end up with a spectacular mess! I think it took me about 30mins to make a strap once I'd made sense of the instructions.
They're tough, flexible, reasonably comfy and as a bonus you can unravel them to produce several feet of strong cord, which may be handy if you go into the wilderness to take photos. I used dark green cord to keep it unobtrusive but many other colours are available.
Leather is out of the question. I feel odd being picky and insisting on only the cheapest and plainest, but really, I just want a piece of 10mm nylon strap with some fixed triangle split rings.
Hit up your local thrift store like Goodwill or a military surplus and find any old thing with a strap on it, like a purse or luggage, and re-purpose it.
I can't remember where I got mine. It's black cord with yellow (I wanted blue, but hubby thought Steeler colors would be funny) and it's adjustable. If I can find the vendor, I'll post back with it.
