I haven't done any real digital editing for quite a while, but thought I'd post a new find: http://www.kanzelsberger.com/pixel/

It does RGB, CMYK, HDR, color management, and is cross platform... Windows, OS-X, Linux, BSD, BeOS, OS/2, DOS, and others, apparently with the same interface across platforms. It's still in beta, and costs $38 until release 1.0 comes out for about $100. Beta buyers get every release up 'til 2.0 for their $38.

I've downloaded and installed it under Linux, Ubuntu 7.04. It apparently still has some bugs, but it aims to be a full fledged editor along the lines of Photoshop, and to take advantage of PS plug-ins in future releases. I haven't used it enough to comment very knowledgably yet, except to say that it runs fine in the couple of hours I've tried it, and I am not used to using layers, so it's a bit of a learning curve for me. There are free downloadable demos for all platforms on the web site.

Just thought this might be useful for those on a limited budget or with an OS that Adobe and others won't support.

Lee:

Thanks for posting the info. My intuition keeps whispering something about Open Source being an integral part of the future of creativity - far more than just a budget way to go. If you can find the time, could you post a 'bug-watch' as you learn more?
