"pinholes" on HP5+

... if this is reticulation, it only happens in very small localized areas, not bigger than a dust speck. I see a few dozen "white specks" on prints of the affected negative

Such does not sound like reticulaton.

But aside from clumping, I can guarantee you that XTOL doesn't cause pinholes. Even to this day people are still paranoid delusional about it at times but forget the main truth: it's an extremely good developer.

I hadn't discussed Xtol in this thread, but I have used the developer from it's UK release until about 18 months ago with no problems whatsoever.

But I wouldn't totally rule out an issue with Xtol simple because there's too many reports of iron in water supplies causing problems with it, iron does cause a problem with fixers as well.

But I wouldn't speculate as to what's causing the OP's issues.

Any update on this. We have been having a boatload of similar problems with HP5+ and FP4 this semester at my University. This is my last semester and I am going to be done in May, but never had this problem until this past semester. (4 years)

Your University should surely consider contacting Simon from Ilford. He is regularly on this thread, and is a wonderful spokesman for a wonderful company.

I contacted Simon Galley about this problem and I must say he was quite willing to do his best to understand the problem. Then I sent a neg to one of his technicians, Sue, and she examined the neg but couldn't find an explanation...
She asked the permission to cut a piece off the neg to give to others technicians...
still waiting...
Mikez, could you please explain your process with the HP5 or at least what developer you used..
Thank you.
