Hi,

is anyone use the PhotoTherm Super Sidekick (SSK-4V)?
Do you recommend this machine?

I shoot approx 30-50 rolls/year of 35mm and 120 film. Is it worth to buy this machine or I save more if continue to developing film in lab. I about never need push and other special processes.

What could cost a third hand 3 years old such a machine?

Also, this machine seems a bit bulky when on the table with bottles below, what's your opinion?

Hi Evgeny,

I have the latest model PhotoTherm SSK RGH8. The SSK 4 is the smaller version of the one i have. They are excellent machines and i would recommend them to anyone.
Almost everything is controllable through the programmers interface built into the machine. PhotoTherm also provides great support. They have been very helpful with any questions I have had. For B&W, PhotoTherm only recommends Tmax developer at 1:5. I find that it works great for everything from 35mm to 4x5.
I have also used the machine to process my E6 and C41. The results are great. They are designed for ultra repeatability and consistency.

The machine is designed to be used on a table or a stand. They are not very small. You will need room to store the chemical bottles below the unit.
Check out http://www.phototherm.com/ for more information on the unit and accessories. The manual is on there site with full diagrams and instructions for use.

The prices for used unit that i have seen can range from $300-1500. You will have to look at your lab bills and see if it is a good financial decision for you.
Make sure that it has the tube with the spindle. At least 4 35mm plastic reels. They can expand to 120mm. For 120/220 development, you will need what PhotoTherm calls a film clamp. They are a white piece of plastic that fits over the ned of the film after you load it onto the reel. Without it, the film can come off the reel during development.
It should also have the chem tanks with tubing, and 2 large ones for waste and water.

If you have anymore questions, please let me know.

Best,

Hi imazursky, thank you for reply.

I shoot approx 30-50 rolls/year.
I just calculated the cost of development approx 120 rolls of film stored in my refrigerator in a pro lab.
The gives me approx 2-3 years of return of the initial investment in this machine ($1000) and chemistry ($110 for a 5 litters 3-bath kit in local store).
I also reviewed video presentation on the photothern web site and found this machine a bit bulky for my home.
I heard only good opinions about SSK 4, but think to not buy it...

Hi Evgeny,

There is one other thing to consider before you turn it down. Will there be a pro lab around you to develop your film in 2-3 years?
And/Or will there prices skyrocket? Probably.
Although a thousand is a bit much for the 4 roll unit. I think i only paid $1250 for my 8 roll unit. That was 4 or 5 years ago.
I would try to get them to lower the price.

I like the fact that if i want to develop a roll or some sheets at 2 am i can.

I actually consider (1) the cost of development of slide film, and in particular 120 slide film, and (2) my own time I need to spend in the development processes, and (3) space to store all these equipment.

I don't care about availability of the lab, since I can buy the film processor anytime later. If all labs will really close, then no chemistry will be available either.

Thank!
