Photoshop Elements

I won't go into details of the 'why's and wherefores' but I cannot load my PS4 onto my laptop.

Not a big problem as I have it on my desk top machine. My operating system on the Laptop is Windows XP and I this evening loaded a free 'bundled' copy of Photoshop Elements 2 (I know it is old) and was quite impressed how much there is. I know the current version of Elements is 12, a long way from Elements 2 but is this compatible with Windows XP? It certainly is a lot cheaper so seems like a good buy.

I suspect most of the tools in Elements 2 are not available for 16-bit images, so unless you will be working with jpegs for web output, this is a waste of time.

By PS4 do you mean Photoshop 4 or CS4? Elements 2 is not as old as Photoshop 4 and would outperform it in many ways not the least of which is that Elements 2 has a browser. Elements 2 was a fine program based upon Photoshop 6 and would still offer a lot of basic functionality within its design limitations. CS4 of course is much newer and in many ways has a lot of the functionality of CS5, CS6 and CC.

BTW, I wouldn't stress too much about the last poster's comment that lack of 16 bit processing makes a program useless for anything other than web images. It's great if you want to go down that path but depending on how the image was originated, 16 bit may lead to nothing more than larger files. OzJohn

as far aS I REMEMBER,YOU CAN GET A FREE COPY OF CS2 ON ADOBE'S SITE but nothing is truly free.the time investment into unknown software is significant.nevertheless,I found the UI of CS and even CC to be quite stable, so, no leaning investment lost.

with the introduction of Adobe CC, I gave up on PSE.too often,for my work,I need the features of the 'real'PS anyway.Elements is too imited for me but PSCC rocks.

PSE V2 is limited in disk size it will recognize. I have a 1TB drive that PSE 2 refuses to recognize as having free space. I have to save images on a small thumb drive and then transfer.

PE recognizing disk space must be an issue with the operatng system not an application.In modern programing applications just call OS subroutines for that. IF PSEL has an issue with that disk, other apps should also have an issue.

Ralph, sorry to say that PSE is the only application on my computer that refuses to recognize disks greater than a certain size. I get the PSE message "Disk Full", which is odd considering that I have nearly 1/2 TB free. I just save to smaller capacity drives with no problem.

It works just fine otherwise and I have been using it happily with this one glitch plus one other. It is sometimes unpredictable when using the clipboard to copy and paste pictures on Windows 7.

PE,I know what you mean.I get this sometimes too;All it means that PSEis convinced that the greatness of your images is too much for your hard drive.Just back it off a bit and get out of MOMA mode and all'll be fine
