Some great news continues in the analog world.

PhotoKlassik International is now SilvergrainClassics!
2020 seems to be a good year for new beginnings: a new decade, new developments throughout the film industry, and a new name for our print journal about the entire world of analog photography.

PhotoKlassik International is now SilvergrainClassics! But let me reassure everyone right away that the quality and nature of the content has not changed, only the name!

Along with the rest of the industry, we are transforming to better fit the needs of the analog community. When we started eighteen months ago, we weren’t even sure if our Kickstarter would be funded and were happy to build on the existing expertise of partners from the German PhotoKlassik. We had even planned to have a small percentage of common content. However, it quickly became clear that our growing readership would be truly international— over 50 countries and counting— and our content needed to be weighted to fit our global audience.

As we found our footing and gained experience and insights, we noticed that PhotoKlassik International had found its own identity apart from its namesake in Germany. At the same time, we were looking to find a distribution partner who could help us reach a broader base and get the publication into brick and mortar bookstores.

While working on this transition, we heard variations on the same comment again and again. “We already have PhotoKlassik,” in reference to the German magazine. “Why should I get it in English? Is there a difference?” There were also mix-ups with email contacts, social media posts, and website searches. It became clear that we needed to cut the apron strings, as it were, and name our own brand. Fortunately, choosing a name wasn’t difficult since the other leg of our operation is the SilvergrainStudioLab and the brand SilvergrainClassics existed before we started PhotoKlassik International. This site is not only the best place to buy SilvergrainClassics and find out about our workshops. We have also started a blog with this first post, and we are building a databank with manuals for cameras and other gear.

You get a lot of bang for the buck with SilvergrainClassics, besides being printed at book quality, our journal is 95% content, compared to 70% or lower for some other publications. Order one and see for yourself, then make the call. If you have done this already, please let us know what you think about it, the good, the bad, the ugly. We are always interested in what our readers think.

Doug, you’ve convinced me, just purchased a subscription. Yes, it is a little pricey at first glance. But I think it is terribly important to support film-centric endeavors whenever we can. $25 USD for a content rich current publication like you have described sounds like a deal.

It's a great magazine. So nice to have an actual, nice, well produced three dimensional object in your hands

It's very well packed to make sure it arrives in pristine condition. It's a premium product. Money well spent.

I have purchased all issues so far and agree it is very well printed pub. I do wish subscription options will have become more agressive as at current it almost makes no sense to subscribe and go issue by issue route instead. So I think they are losing out on higher readership base because of how subscriptions are structured.

I got my newest copy of Silvergrain Classics today. What a beautiful magazine! The big beautiful ads for film are such a fun treat. I like advertising in print. I have some precious old Darkroom magazines, but these are antique. The article on the Nova products caught my eye. I will be going to bed early tonight to enjoy my newest copy. I live in the US and every copy has arrived in Mint condition. Subscribe and patronize the advertisers.

Have been a subscriber from the beginning and will likely remain so. In an age where print magazines of all kinds are regularly going out of business, being printed on progressively flimsier and flimsier paper stock, loaded with more and more ads, and whose readers are subjected to more and more schizophrenic and unreadable layout schemes, this magazine is a rare breath of fresh air.
Quality you almost never see any longer, from any quarter. Nobody is getting rich from producing this, and I wish them well for their continued success.

I read the German "original". I make it a day out, with the camera, a couple of times a year, to pick up the newest copy in the book store on a railway station.
I guess printing en lay out of Silvergrain classic is very simular to PhotoKlassik and I must say it is really high quality. A nice magazine to collect.

Very impressive that SilvergrainClassics has been able to get full page adverts from Kodak on the back cover. Where-else would you see Tri-X promoted in such a way...

I'm having trouble signing on to renew. I've sent a email on their site, requested password reset. Great publication. It's expensive, (what isn't today ) but such a nice present in the mail

So, question, is the content different enough to justify subscribing to SilvergrainClassics when one already has PhotoKlassik?

Reportedly the two magazine are NOT same show. International version is entirely different and name was changed to ensure no confusion.

The US Dollar is suffering from all the deficit spending. 96 USD for 4 issues. 40 USD is for shipping. Better have some geek darkroom stuff in it. I don't care about looking at "blurry art pictures"

You won't. And there are only few magazines produced on such a high quality paper, all from the rich world of "never-too-expensive-to-buy" stuff. And the content is pure analog with few adds, so the cost relates to that fact. Blurry is not part of this though. It is a high grade publication that comes at a price. The only thing I wish they could do is have more aggressive subscription model. As is it almost makes no sense to subscribe when one considers getting a few back issues at once to spread postage cost.

I've been very happy with the magazine. I love the ads. I love the stories on equipment old and new. Adox, Kodak, Jobo, Gossen and others are advertising. I think that's cool. I really enjoy seeing the issues arrive. I love a real magazine.

Have you checked your spam box? Also, in case you have made several reset requests (because nothing was coming) then usually security settings kick in and some pre-set time must elapse before new request can be accepted by server. That time could be 24 hours or more and one cannot try within that wait window because it keeps resetting the timer. I don't know if that's the problem in your case, but that is often why some password rests don't work as expected.

Just in case some of our annual subscribers are out there and want to renew, you might come into the same situation as above, here is the fix. Previous subscriptions were done via our old PhotoKlassics International online shop. Unfortunately, when we rebranded we used a new company for our online storefront and each subscriber must re-register with this new platform in order to renew. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate the understanding as we make this transition.

Hello swchris, as mentioned by one of the other members, we are and always have been an separate entity. Our content is not a translated version of the PhotoKlassik magazine but all new and original content chosen by our editorial staff. We used the name only as assist, a launching platform if you like, until we got on our feet. Hope this helps to explain the difference.

Hello mschem, yes there is plenty of "geek darkroom stuff" in the magazine. We regularly have content from industry leading firms as well as photographers covering darkroom techniques and equipment. Subscribe and geek it up! Enjoy.
