The US CDC website has data since 2000(or earlier) and so far, in a decade, there were a total of ~ 6,000 deaths. Incredible, inconsolable for the victim's families, but in the bigger picture, not that many.

And, so far, with luck, it hasn't doubled every week, god forbid.
The WHO predicts up to 10,000 new cases *per week* by December. With a mortality rate increasing up into the 70% range, that means there'll be more deaths by the end of December every week than in the last decade.
