By the way, the 'common cold' kills between 250,000 and 500,000 people every year.

I thought the WHO should be taking the lead and coordinating. The problem with the WHO recently is lack of funding and poor management.

At any rate, I hope that photojournalist doesn't become ill form this horrible disease.

The article's headline has mislead you. If your read the last paragraph, it provides a totally different impression.
"Overall, governments have donated some $376 million to other U.N. agencies involved the response to Ebola, which translates to about 38% of what the global organization needs to meet its funding goals, according to a U.N. spokesman."

Even Germany initial donation is be increased along with other nations. Berlin would raise spending on fighting the Ebola outbreak to €102 million ($130.9 million) from €17 million came one day after President Barack Obama held a video conference with the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and the U.K. to discuss a more aggressive response to Ebola. dr's without borders is on the ground there, and has been for months
i have been donating proceeds from sales (of gear and images) directly to them and others
who are responding to crisis situations like the ebola epidemic.
they need all the $$$ and help they can get ( and every penny helps ! )

governments and world health agencies are slow, donate $$ to people who are already there and doing good works.
one great hour of sharing also has people on the ground and are usually some of the first people there ...
both organizations are much faster than slower-than-a-snail's-pace of governments sending $$$ ...

Why did it come to this? it's not like Ebola appeared three weeks ago. Governments the world over are to blame for the current situation. And they ban one man from public contact as if that's going to fix things. Untold trillions are spent on finding new ways to kill indiscriminately when mother nature does a fine job for free. Why do we let this go on?

My apologies for the rant but this did not have to happen and those truly responsible should be questioned/criticized openly for it. The conditions in Africa are deplorable and the world stands by with it's collective thumb up it's ass all the while pointing fingers at others. Honestly WTF???

Sometimes I believe we deserve to perish.

I can only hope that the current ebola epidemic will serve as a catalyst for the development of a proper vaccination. As we have seen, several different types of these were available at the outbreak but all were still in a sort of beta phase, I believe because no one was willing to fund further research on these medications so far, since the disease was not considered serious enough a danger. The latest developments, especially ebola occurring in Europe and the US, may change this attitude...

While we're on the Ebola FUD, maybe it'll serve well to see that as many as Ebola has killed this year, as many, if not more have been killed in a day from traffic accidents.

And as far as the stupidity of sending soldiers into a place where doctors are needed, well I suppose, it's another stab at getting merit out of the Nobel piece price(not a typo).

It would help, I think, if folks acted sensibly, said "we'll get through this, we'll take precaution" instead of calling everything as a 'crisis'.

[Any perceived anger is towards the FUD and the idiocy in responses to the the 'crisis' not to any posts or posters here]

But analoguey, traffic accident deaths will not double next week and double the next week after that (or whatever the current predictions of the speed of growth of instances of ebola in the West African population are). The issue is not how many people have already died, but the potential for this to become, very rapidly, a gigantic catastrophe unless it is checked.

Yes, there's a possibility, but so far, the media, the damned WHO and others are crossing that 'possibility' bridge without even dealing with things realistically - and when the bridge's in the far,far-distance, thank God!

The US CDC website has data since 2000(or earlier) and so far, in a decade, there were a total of ~ 6,000 deaths. Incredible, inconsolable for the victim's families, but in the bigger picture, not that many.

The sober assessment should be that 'we might have an issue if it breaks certain scale' (from what I read, ebola isnt passed on by air, but by touch/exposure to bodily fluids).
Creating mass-hysteria has the one effect of giving govts the license to act unintelligibly and totally contrary to what might be required.

Instead of assessing what's changed this year, since the time Ebola's known - the idea seems to be 'lets put the word out there, and hope it solves the problem'! (almost like jumping in a stuck lift, hoping it reaches it's destination)

And, so far, with luck, it hasn't doubled every week, god forbid.

There was a lot of hullabaloo about SARS too - but what did happen really?

RE deaths by automobile accidents: The USA and other countries did things to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities... set belts, air bags, collision and crush tests, fuel tank improvements, etc. Without these standards in place vehicular deaths would be far greater. What more can they do other than make us all drive Military Tanks at 20 MPH?

Did they make vaccines available to save lives? No, they didn't. It costs too much.

How many billions of dollars have they spent testing and regulating automobile safety standards? Countless...

we're going wayy off-topic here - and I'm not saying there's a magic bullet re traffic incidents, I'm just urging against hysteria over Ebola.

Not to mention all the "product placements" camouflaged as "news"... sorry to continue off-topic.

I respect journalists who put their lives on the line to bring truth to the rest of the world. Personally, I'd rather be in a war zone than surrounded by deadly Ebola disease.
