I spent some time at the Huntington Library grounds. Tens of acres of beautiful gardens surround several buildings housing books and manuscripts. Multiple photos interveave within the exhibitions.
Carlton E Watkins contributed to the granting of the Yosemite Valley to California. His photos are magestic.
William Henry Jackson was the official Geological Survey photographer and his interest photographing Native Americans stands as one of finest records.
Dick Whittington Studios specialized in commercial and industrial photography throughout Los Angeles in its growthperiod post WW2.
Author Jack London snapped up several pics after the San Francisco earthquake. His photo album is a detailed record after the disaster.
Stone and Webster, a well known and respected engineering firm has thousands of photographs from the many construction projects they had industrializing the west.
Finally there is a remarkable exhibition honoring You Chung Hong. An early American of Chinese descent who became on of America's first attorney's of Chinese heritage. The exhibition has several photos detailing his life and times. Particular focus on the life of Chinese immigrants to the US during the Chinese Exclusion Act era and the Old Los Angeles Chinatown prior to its razing for Union Station.
If you are ever in Pasadena, stop in. Well worth the visit. $25 adult admission. http://www.huntington.org/
